My Talk with Clare Newman About Sustainability on Governors Island

  • Governors Island stands at the forefront of sustainability efforts in New York City. I sat down with president and CEO of Trust for Governors Island, Clare Newman to discuss sustainability, and innovation. Governors Island is an epicenter of sustainability efforts including their Climate Piloting Program and their partnership with Itselectric – a tech start up that focuses on electric vehicle charging stations.

ROWAN: Thanks for taking the time to speak with me Clare. Does Governors Island have any current projects or partnerships you’re excited for?

CLARE: Our new partnership with itselectric is the perfect example of what’s possible here on Governors Island, they will be supplying us with compact curbside vehicle charging technology. Enabling us to modernize our fleet of operations vehicles while dramatically cutting our emissions and demonstrating the exciting future of climate solutions for New York City and cities around the world.

ROWAN: That does sound exciting! How did the Trust and itselectric connect?

CLARE: Last year itselectric joined the Governors Island Piloting Program, which is an initiative on Governors Island to connect with pioneers of sustainability, which give innovators and start ups a unique opportunity to test their climate technologies and collect data in a real-world environment while also engaging with funders, investors, and prospective customers. Last year our theme was the future of clean energy.

ROWAN: What’s the theme for this years piloting program?

CLARE: This years theme is the circular economy. We’re focusing on circular economy products and solutions to drive down the climate impact of the urban waste stream and extend resource recovery to our businesses and neighborhoods. Transitioning to a circular economy that refurbishes, recovers, and recycles materials is crucial in reducing waste transportation and minimizes what we put in landfills. This is key to creating a sustainable and low impact community.

ROWAN: Who can apply for this years piloting program?

CLARE: Applicants must be incorporated as a legal entity and must be working on urban climate solutions. We encourage start ups and young companies. Underrepresented populations are highly encouraged to apply.

ROWAN: Is there anything else we should know about this years piloting program?

CLARE: Our application deadline is December 5 2024 and programming will start May 2025. We’re excited to see who will apply this year. More information can be found on our website http://www.govisland.com
