The journey of this organization has been long and difficult but over time it has achieved its goals and objectives, not only have they helped more than 73,000 people with each year that the organization has been active, but they have established an impact in communities with difficulties.
Recently I had the opportunity to establish a conversation and do an interview with one of the workers of the organization named Cindy Vasquez. A very professional and kind woman, I had the opportunity to speak with her again since previously thanks to her, I was able to get involved in this organization 3 years ago during my Junior and Senior year in High School.
Questions :
-

What has been your impact with the education and development of our youth?
-

According to your website, you offer help for people in need of housing, what are your strategies?
-

What inspired or motivated you to join the organization in the first place?
-

What is the history and purpose behind the organization?
For the first question, Cindy answered me. “One of the biggest impacts the organization has had since 2023 is that in the majority of high schools where our organization is established, 100% of the seniors from these schools graduate on time and apply to universities through CAMBA College Bound, and not only that, but 59% of our adult clients who have participated in our education programs to obtain a higher degree to have more job opportunities and knowledge. Many of our low-income students manage to enroll and graduate from college and be the first in their families to make an impact on their families.” This response surprised me a lot because I didn’t know that they had more than 100 established locations in high schools and had achieved that great record in less than 2 years since I graduated from high school.
“One of our goals has always been to offer a welcoming home to people and families in need, regardless of their race, immigration status, gender or sexual preference. We will always lend a hand to these people. We have helped over 354 families and introduced them to our permanent housing through our CAMBA’s Family Shelters. But one of our methods for finding these places for them is to connect them through CAMBA HOUSING VENTURES (CHV).
“One of my biggest reasons that made me join this organization was my own life experience. I came from a family with economic difficulties and a not very stable status. One of my teachers during my high school years introduced me to the organization during the 2010s and helped me to be able to enter the university and support my family. I was one of my mother’s first daughters to graduate from university, and I was able to complete my master’s degree in social work. Over time, I managed to get involved in non-profit organizations during my first projects during my university years, and again I found CAMBA, which accepted me with open arms and offered me a paid internship. After all, the trajectory of my career as a professional and my passion to support the organization grew more and now with all my effort and determination I managed to be one of the hosts of CAMBA’s projects.”
“Camba began with the main purpose of helping those in need of housing and education in the years 1977-1980, but as time went by, the difficulties of families and individuals increased and that caused an imbalance between the communities. So with the arrival of more people to the community, the organization decided to expand its resources and establish more connections with other organizations and government aid to help our low-income communities. If we think about it in depth, the CAMBA community has grown and has extended its hand to those in need like us who at some point came to require the help of this organization, and not only for ourselves, but also to people close to us and strangers who at some point have gone through the same thing as us. At the end of the day, we all came to this organization for a strong reason or even for a simple silent help. People who are interested in our organization will always be welcome, and we will always have options depending on their needs.”
Cindy had the courage to answer all my questions with great sincerity and honesty, which has always captivated me to remain connected to this organization, because just as it made an impact on my life, I hope that in the next 10 years, the organization continues to provide help to the needy in our country and show those who are on the wrong path that there is always an opportunity in this life.
