PLACE, SPACE AND EXPERIENCE
This seminar is designed to provide an introductory survey of material from the range of disciplines that comprise the Environmental Social Sciences, and to engage students in the scholarly practices of critical reading and writing. Readings—which encompass historical and theoretical overviews as well as contemporary analyses of a variety of issues–are designed to familiarize students with the literature concerning people’s engagements with the environment from the fields of anthropology, sociology, geography, urban planning, architecture, landscape architecture, environmental design and management, and psychology. The goal is for each participant to begin to develop his or her own perspective on the nature of people-environment relationships in their larger social, economic, cultural, political, and historical context; to get a sense of the historical evolution of ideas in the field; and to begin to develop a research topic and related bibliography.
