New Media Lab

THE NEW MEDIA LAB (NML) assists City University of New York (CUNY) Graduate Center faculty and doctoral students from a variety of academic disciplines to create multimedia projects based on their own scholarly research. Our goal is to integrate new media into traditional academic practice, challenging scholars to develop fresh questions in their respective fields using the tools of new technology. The NML is committed to a vision of new technology based on open access to ideas, tools, and resources.

With ongoing support from CUNY, the New Media Lab has become a dynamic environment in which projects funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Rockefeller Foundation, the Old York Library Foundation, and other private and public sources demonstrate new approaches and methods of merging digital media, scholarship, and learning.

Located in room 7388.01 at the CUNY Graduate Center and run under the auspices of the Center for Media and Learning / American Social History Project, NML researchers:

work across academic disciplines to produce scholarly digital media projects;

analyze Internet usage in the educational, social, and commercial sectors;

construct 3-D environments that explore ways of visualizing the arts, humanities, and sciences

digitally archive and analyze a wide range of data
participate in public programs that address the critical intersection of knowledge and technology

    Communications Production Manager

    Data & Society Research Institute is seeking a Communications Production Manager (“CPM”) to support the Director of Communications by 1) managing and refining the editorial process of research products for the communications team, and 2) implementing external relations projects that connect our research to press. The CPM reports to the Director of Communications. The position is based out of our New York City office.

    About the Communications Production Manager

    This mid-career specialist role will pivot between driving internal research production and convening trainings to make this research more visible and public. The CPM will manage the entire lifecycle of our research publications, ensuring that project researchers and collaborators are informed and prepared to meet deadlines and deliver to standard. The CPM will also support the Director of Communications in running dynamic, substantive, and well-attended workshops that bring our latest research findings to interested members of the press.

    The CPM understands how to motivate intellectuals and specialists to produce on time, and has deep professional links to individuals and prominent outlets in the national print, digital, and multimedia press. They are a power user of project management tools such as Asana, and have held one or more professional roles that involved shaping and managing publication workflows.

    They have provided editorial support in graduate-level academic settings, and have led professional convenings or workshops. The CPM understands the basic policy discourse around privacy, technology, and data retention–and the broad implications of large-scale data collection, retention, and analysis across a range of societal issues.

     

    Responsibilities will include:

    MEDIA TRAINING

    • Conceptualize and organize workshops to share Data & Society’s insights from key research themes with journalists and other media professionals;
    • Provide substantive curatorial and editorial input into training materials, ensuring that content is analytically deep but accessible to multiple audiences;
    • On occasion, support the Director of Communications in procuring pitch guidelines and media training/coaching for lead researchers.

    PUBLICATION MANAGEMENT

    • Guide researchers through the process of developing publications such as one-pagers, whitepapers, and reports;
    • Manage internal workflows with Asana, Google calendar, and email to keep team apprised of works-in-progress, deadlines, and launch plans;
    • Track internal drafts, maintaining editorial standards such as length and providing light copyediting to drafts and products where needed;
    • Ensure editorial and design contractors are lined up to support workflow;
    • Advise the Director of Communications on project launch timelines, and overall communications strategy;
    • Support the Director of Communications in managing the day-to-day work of a Communications Assistant and Design Lead, delegating product-related operations and web development tasks;
    • Ensure that the Data & Society mission and brand is clear, accessible, and intuitive in external output.

    Qualifications

    • 5-7 years of experience in publication and people management, with increasing levels of responsibility;
    • Evidenced professional familiarity with the tech sector, writ large;
    • Experience coordinating complex digital or print publications for specialist audiences, especially in the technology sector or in academia;
    • Ability to work independently, spot opportunities, and move quickly to take advantage of them;
    • Excellent writer and editor. Experience managing academic workshops or press briefings a distinct plus.

    Practical Considerations

    • This is not a remote position. You must work full time from the Data & Society New York City office.
    • Salary range is $75,000-$85,000 per annum. Annual salary is commensurate on experience, and you will be offered a generous benefits package and paid time off.
