Notes from the 1 October 2012 Meeting

  • We had seven attendees at today’s meeting. Jennifer Poggiali from Lehman College led things off with a presentation of the just launched mobile library tour she and her colleagues created. Some notes about the tour:

    – Found at http://wp.lehman.edu/library/tour/

    – Built in WordPress using the “Responsive Theme” http://themeid.com/responsive-theme/

    – Audio portions turned into YouTube videos (with photos added with the narration), as this seemed like an easy, flexible, and extensible way to present the audio content

    – Kept each video to minute and half or less

    – Limited info about each stop to five key points (worked with staff at those service points to devise the list)

    – Script intentionally asks users to look at specific things on the tour (“Look at the…” or “See what the librarian is doing over at the…”) in the same way that museum tours point out details for the user to pay special attention to

We talked about other tours and scavenger hunts that libraries have developed over the years as well:

    – Baruch College’s virtual tour that is in seven languages: http://newman.baruch.cuny.edu/help/v_tour/

    – Brooklyn College’s LOOP: http://library.brooklyn.cuny.edu/help/loop/

    – North Carolina State University’s Mobile Scavenger Hunt: http://www.lib.ncsu.edu/instruction/scavenger.html

Also of interest: Google’s new app (Android-only at the moment) Field Trip, which offers location aware alerts:

We agreed that the date for the next meeting of the roundtable would follow the usual pattern of being on the first Monday of the month at 10:30 am. That next meeting will be November 5 at the CUNY Graduate Center and will lead off with a discussion from Stephen Klein about mobile options in WordPress.
