Listenin’ to the City CCNY/CWE

The aim of this group is to explore ‘listening’ as part of a journalistic practice. Our members have actively listened to local organizations throughout the city and work on a digital project to document their experiences through expository and creative writing, audio/video recordings and photography.

  • Tenement Museum Gala 2024

Everyone knows the Met Gala is one of the most prestigious events that takes place in New York City. The museum raises millions of dollars and generates tons of publicity, as the place celebs feel they “must be seen” at. The Gala raises money so people less fortunate are able to experience art, and attend the museum for free. Downtown, there is another Gala that may not draw the attention of the Met Gala, but is equally as important. On May 2, 2024 at the City Winery, the Tenement Museum hosted its own Gala and fundraising event. The event was a celebration of our shared histories, and raised money so those less fortunate can attend for free, as well as to cover the costs of New York City student field trips. The event honored those that worked hard to showcase the earlier struggles of our New York City ancestors, regardless of race, religion, sex, or creed. The Gala featured an interview with Jelani Cobb, the Dean of Columbia Journalism School. He shared his thoughts on the importance of understanding one’s ancestry, and the importance of seeking out your family’s stories.
