Listenin’ to the City CCNY/CWE

The aim of this group is to explore ‘listening’ as part of a journalistic practice. Our members have actively listened to local organizations throughout the city and work on a digital project to document their experiences through expository and creative writing, audio/video recordings and photography.

Non-Committal Ways to Give Back at Queens Farm

  • Living in the City doesn’t mean you can’t get close to nature.

Yes, there’s a massive working farm in the heart of Queens that’s over 300 years old! And did you know that you don’t have to commit to volunteer hours or socializing with others (the HORROR) to enjoy it?

Maybe you work long hours or don’t have the time or finances to commit to a class at the farm. Guess what? No problem!

Here are just a few ways you can easily enjoy all the perks of Queen’s Farm without a second thought:

    • Drop off compost: Save your scraps and coffee grounds for QCFM fields! Just inside the main entrance, there’s a drop off site open every day from 10 AM to 4 PM.
    • Feed the goats and sheep: For just a few bucks, give the kids a fun hour and pick up a bag of feed hay at the Farm Store. The goats and sheep will be so happy to see you!
    • Visit the Con Edison Reading Room: While you’re enjoying your free visit to the farm, make sure to stop by this charming reading room. Cozy up with a book on gardening, NYC history, or a children’s book on farm animals.
    • Tour the Adriance Farmhouse: Only have time on the weekends? This is the perfect time to come for a free tour of the historic 300-year-old farmhouse located at the heart of the farm. Take the 90-minute tour between 11 AM and 4 PM most weekends throughout the year.
    • Stop by the Farmstand: Run by and pick up some seasonal produce or farm products 5 days a week from 10 to 4, from mid-May through mid-November. Can’t make it to the farm? There are also 2 offsite stands, one at Queensborough Hall on Thursdays, and one at Jamaica Hospital on Fridays.
    • Some events are free! For example, the entire month of June is Milk & Honey Month, which features a wide variety of free and paid activities every day! Come and stay as short or as long as you like, with opportunities for fun classes, seminars, and more.
