Listenin’ to the City CCNY/CWE

The aim of this group is to explore ‘listening’ as part of a journalistic practice. Our members have actively listened to local organizations throughout the city and work on a digital project to document their experiences through expository and creative writing, audio/video recordings and photography.

Empathy

  • Putting one’s self in another’s shoes is something we all need to do once in a while. Understanding we’re all the same, have all had or needed help, or even a leg up through previous family struggles is a good way to move forward in life. As President Obama told the great chef and TV host Anthony Bourdain in his 2016 Vietnam interview when talking about the world “people everywhere are pretty much the same”. No matter what your dreams or fears are, someone that came before you has experienced the same. If you’ve ever felt maybe we haven’t moved forward as a society, please make a trip to the Tenement Museum, and see how people from all walks of life lived in the same conditions two centuries ago in New York City. There is an outhouse for a bathroom residents had to use (still there, right off the street), and a water pump (also still there) showing how far we’ve come. The hopes and dreams may change, but the common goal of moving forward continues. Understanding where we came from helps you understand someone else’s plight and dreams. And hopefully, a trip to this museum makes us all better understanding people.
