Listenin’ to the City CCNY/CWE

The aim of this group is to explore ‘listening’ as part of a journalistic practice. Our members have actively listened to local organizations throughout the city and work on a digital project to document their experiences through expository and creative writing, audio/video recordings and photography.

When I think about places that have remained unchanged over the years, the Classic Center in the Bronx comes to mind. It’s remarkable how it has retained its original structure, seemingly frozen in time. The Classic Center served as a hub for the youth in my community, a place where we gathered to hang out, play sports, and simply enjoy being kids. I have countless memories of attending Girl Scouts meetings and working as a summer youth employee there. It was also where I made lifelong friends and participated in the local basketball team’s friendly rivalries. The Classic Center has stood as a timeless fixture in our community since its establishment in the early 2000s. Its enduring presence is a testament to its significance in our neighborhood. Despite not having visited in years, I have fond memories of spending time there, especially on Saturdays and after school. I recall fondly how we would often grab a table near the corner, watching the world go by as we indulged in treats and engaged in lively conversations. These moments were invaluable, filled with laughter, camaraderie, and shared experiences.
