Listenin’ to the City CCNY/CWE

The aim of this group is to explore ‘listening’ as part of a journalistic practice. Our members have actively listened to local organizations throughout the city and work on a digital project to document their experiences through expository and creative writing, audio/video recordings and photography.

Inside The Cathedral of Saint John the Divine. The view looking from the alter to the main doors is where the Rose Window can be seen. The Rose window is a symbol of Mary, the mother of Jesus, and Jesus is centered in the window. Many cathedrals have a Rose Window, but this one is Forty feet in diameter, and it is the third largest Rose Window in the world.

When was the last time you faced difficulty in your life? Were you alone? Were you afraid? Did you know what to do? Did problem solving seem impossible? Did you consider asking for help? Since 2020, one’s personal life does not seem so individualized. Collective human experiences have found people listening to comparable stories in society more every day. Today people have been becoming increasingly engaged with problem solving. Many of these problems people in society are grappling with are rooted in human rights issues and inequality in all its forms. In the search to find resolve, the necessity for action is understood. With a new sense of what community means today, more space has been made to focus on access to resources to solve problems. The question now is; Who can help people in crisis? The answer can be found in many places within one’s community. One place in New York City is the Episcopal church at The Cathedral of Saint John the Divine.
