LACUNY Services for Incarcerated People Roundtable

The Services for Incarcerated People Roundtable provides a forum for librarians who support, or are interested in supporting, library services for incarcerated people to discuss current issues, broaden their understanding, and raise awareness of information barriers within the carceral system. The Roundtable connects CUNY librarians with other librarian-led groups, such as Prison Library Support Network, that provide direct services to incarcerated people, and serves as a resource for CUNY groups such as the UFS Committee on Higher Education in the Prisons and those working in prison education programs. https://lacunysips.commons.gc.cuny.edu/

update from the Prison Library Support Network for trained volunteers

• Hello PLSN Volunteers,

A huge thank you to all our wonderful volunteer letter writers! In just one week, we have already sent out responses to 12 patrons, and an additional 48 letters are currently being written and/or reviewed. Thanks to y’alls dedication, we have only 15 (!!!!) letters remaining on the sign up sheet from our initial batch of 75! Once these last remaining letters have been claimed, we will update the sign up sheet with the next 75 letters which were processed earlier this year. These patrons wrote to us in January, so to remain well within our projected response time of 4-6 months, we are hoping to have most of these letters sent out by the end of April!
To see the entire list, head over to https://airtable.com/shrKDG1j0RgxzchWR.After you claim a question, Airtable will send you the full scan of the request. If you don’t see this or can’t find the details you need, let us know. The due date is set for five days from when you signed up and can be found in the follow-up email. Don’t forget it is easily adjusted – just let us know if you need more time.
We have new templates for questions that we cannot answer. If you claim a letter involving extensive medical and/or legal research, fascist or white supremacist materials, or any other question which you feel goes against our polices, use one of the templates found here: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1WZvporGc6zYph8lEZ6ITWDZGO_MRxnRq?usp=sharing
Send your completed response to plsn_nyc@protonmail.com.
As always, the coordinators are here to support you! If you have any questions, get stuck, or need help, reach out to the coordinators by emailing plsn_nyc@protonmail.com, or ask fellow volunteers in the Element reference chat room: https://app.element.io/#/room/#plsn-reference:matrix.org
Thank you so much for your energy and time! Y’all are amazing!
