LACUNY Services for Incarcerated People Roundtable

The Services for Incarcerated People Roundtable provides a forum for librarians who support, or are interested in supporting, library services for incarcerated people to discuss current issues, broaden their understanding, and raise awareness of information barriers within the carceral system. The Roundtable connects CUNY librarians with other librarian-led groups, such as Prison Library Support Network, that provide direct services to incarcerated people, and serves as a resource for CUNY groups such as the UFS Committee on Higher Education in the Prisons and those working in prison education programs. https://lacunysips.commons.gc.cuny.edu/

Prison Library Support Network Event and Art Opening August 12

  • PLSN needs volunteers to join our in-person work party taking place from noon-5pm on Saturday, August 12 at Lunita Loft (576 3rd Avenue, Top Floor, Brooklyn NY 11215). This volunteer event will be followed by a reception for Redemption I Refuse to Stay Silent, an art opening & fundraiser directly benefiting Steven Levy, an incarcerated artist – more details below.

We need as many helping hands as possible to address and stamp a couple hundred envelopes. This will allow us to share crucial updates about our reference letter service to incarcerated people around the country. The recipients of these updates have been waiting longer than anyone for responses and we are desperate to make sure they know how hard we are working to get back to them. If you can make it, send an email to mia.bruner@gmail.com to RSVP before August 4th! Feel free to bring comrades and loved ones along—the more the merrier!

“Redemption: I Refuse to Remain Silent…” An art installation & fundraiser featuring the artwork of Steven Levy

WHERE: Lunita Loft (576 3rd Avenue, Top Floor, Brooklyn NY 11215)

    WHEN:  Saturday, August 12 5pm – 8pm

    ABOUT THIS ART SHOW:

PLSN is partnering with @a.b.o.comix to produce an art show at @lunita.loft in Brooklyn NY highlighting the work of imprisoned artist Steven Levy. The show will run from August 12 to mid-September and will feature collage, paintings, and 3D art using any materials Steven could find or receive through the California prison mail system. This will be a show like no other, and we hope to see massive community turnout to support Steven! All of Steven’s artwork will be for sale (sliding pricing scale for all artwork will be provided at the event), and all sales will go directly toward the artist’s commissary fund. A selection of beverages will also be on sale to benefit the art space.
