LACUNY Services for Incarcerated People Roundtable

The Services for Incarcerated People Roundtable provides a forum for librarians who support, or are interested in supporting, library services for incarcerated people to discuss current issues, broaden their understanding, and raise awareness of information barriers within the carceral system. The Roundtable connects CUNY librarians with other librarian-led groups, such as Prison Library Support Network, that provide direct services to incarcerated people, and serves as a resource for CUNY groups such as the UFS Committee on Higher Education in the Prisons and those working in prison education programs. https://lacunysips.commons.gc.cuny.edu/

Ithaka S+R: Justice Initiatives Webinar: Serving Library Patrons Behind Bars

  • Wed. Apr 24, 2024 3:00 PM – 4:30 PM EDT

As the landscape of higher education in prison shifts and evolves, libraries are making efforts to expand services in prisons across the country while facing a myriad of challenges, from limited staff capacity to shrinking budgets. With support from the Institute for Museum and Library Services (IMLS), Ithaka S+R conducted an exploratory research project to document the different types of libraries involved in providing services in prison, the service models and missions those libraries are advancing, the challenges of working both with other libraries and in collaborating with departments of corrections, as well as opportunities and priorities for providing new, augmented, or wrap-around services. In this webinar, Ithaka S+R’s Tammy Ortiz will lead a panel discussion with experts on key findings and takeaways from the study, including the current state of library services within prisons, how libraries can find more opportunities to collaborate with each other and corrections, and priorities for future growth.
