LACUNY Emerging Technologies Committee

The LACUNY Emerging Technologies Committee is dedicated to collaborative exploration of technologies that further the CUNY libraries’ missions. Through workshops, hack days, demoes, and other meetings, CUNY librarians learn new skills from each other and cultivate a community of openness, sharing, and encouragement.

The LACUNY Emerging Technologies Committee presents an upcoming workshop:

    Secure All the Things

    Friday, January 9, 2015, 2–4pm
    Graduate Center rm. 196.05
Guided by Alycia Sellie (GC) and John Schriner (Lehman)

Join the LACUNY Emerging Technologies Committee for a hands-on discussion of privacy and technology in current library landscapes.

We will talk both about philosophical dilemmas and the technical details of privacy in libraries by sharing simple technologies, resources, or techniques that can help protect patron privacy. To that end, we'll crowd source or “skill-share” suggestions that we could all use to educate our patrons about or advocate for privacy in our libraries. Alycia and John will get the conversation started and present some privacy tools we can start to use everyday.

We would like to start conversations about tools or techniques that all CUNY libraries could implement—even with machines in labs that we may not control. Do you know of a good tool or approach that helps protect patron data? Would you be willing to speak for 5-10 minutes about such a topic?

    Suggested topics could include:
    HTTPS/HTTPS everywhere
    Tor
    Wireshark
    PGP
    Encryption
    Digital Rights/Restrictions Management
Best practices for patron data (not keeping patron records, etc.)
    Best practices for passwords

Please let us know if you’d like to speak or participate via the following form:

    Thank you,
