This course addresses four aspects of graduate studies in English: 1) English studies as a field and discipline; 2) research questions and practices; 3) connections to intellectual communities and networks (i.e. professionalization); and 4) the function of the university.
Goals of this course:
–delve into the historical and institutional context of literary study and consider how this background provides guidance for the profession
–develop tools for graduate study and for competing in the academic job market.
–review techniques of effective academic writing.
–probe various approaches to literary theory and criticism; also, explore how a single author can be interpreted from different critical angles
–discuss issues of textual authority, composition, reception, and dissemination.
–provide training in the use of research libraries and online archives.
–explore the Digital Humanities (DH)
