Hi everyone. It’s me again, but I’m writing this time ON BEHALF OF THE QCC IML TEAM (Profs. Guy, Cornick, Holt, Russell). Here’s their preliminary report, written by Prof. Guy:

I wanted to write to give you the latest good news from our Improving Math Learning Project, Accelerated Workshop Approach to Remedial Mathematics (WARM UPS) which is being funded by CUNY. For the last several semesters, under the auspices of this grant, we have been experimenting with a new pedagogical approach for our Remedial Arithmetic course at Queensborough Community College. The key components include:
A shorter format (only 20 hours of class time).
Curriculum materials specifically developed to maximize success for this new pedagogical approach, namely a specialized textbook with an accompanying online laboratory component.
Over 90% of class time is devoted to student oriented problem solving.
Ample one-on-one student interaction with the professor during class time.
The results thus far have exceeded our expectations. Over the entire last two semesters, students enrolled in our experimental course had a pass rate of 74.3% on the Compass Exam S1 (M1) compared to a 48.6% pass rate for students enrolled in our regular arithmetic course (15 weeks, 3 hours per week). This semester, 2/3 of the students have already completed the class, and we are on track to continue to add to these results. Retention rates in the redesigned arithmetic classes also showed significant improvement; the experimental group had a retention rate of 86.4% compared to a retention rate of 74.7% in the traditional class. We selected subpopulations in both versions of our course with similar incoming characteristics in order to make a valid comparison.
We are also excited to share with you our new website

    http://ArithmeticWARMUPS.com

It hosts all of our online materials for our new course. We intend to enlarge and maintain this website as a free and open resource for students and instructors in any department who are interested in such a course. I personally custom wrote the laboratory software to deliver the content written with my colleagues Dr. Jonathan Cornick, Dr. Robert Holt, and Mr. Andrew Russell. We specially designed this site to deliver our lab materials when accessed using a desktop computer, as well as popular cell phones and other handheld devices.
