Digital Humanities Initiative

The CUNY Digital Humanities Initiative (CUNY DHI), launched in Fall 2010, aims to build connections and community among those at CUNY who are applying digital technologies to scholarship and pedagogy in the humanities. All are welcome: faculty, students, and technologists, experienced practitioners and beginning DHers, enthusiasts and skeptics.

We meet regularly on- and offline to explore key topics in the Digital Humanities, and share our work, questions, and concerns. See our blog for more information on upcoming events (it’s also where we present our group’s work to a wider audience). Help edit the CUNY Digital Humanities Resource Guide, our first group project. And, of course, join the conversation on the Forum.

Job: Web Developer for Humanities Commons

  • We’re looking to hire a web developer to work with us on Humanities Commons (hcommons.org), the open-access, open-source scholarly network and repository. Please feel free to get in touch if you have any questions!

    WEB DEVELOPER

    Under the supervision of the head of software development, works on the development of the WordPress-based Humanities Commons, enhancing its functionality and responding to bug reports. Contributes to the development of the MLA Web site, enhancing site functionality and responding to bug reports. Assists with the maintenance of publication metadata and associated Web sites. Uses strong interpersonal skills to work effectively with supervisor, colleagues, MLA members, and external contacts. Maintains confidentiality in all matters that require it. Performs other duties as assigned by the head.​

    Requirements
    · At least two years of experience with PHP-based application frameworks in a production environment
    · At least two years of experience with WordPress plug-in and theme development
    · Experience with Web presentation layer development (HTML, CSS, JS) in a production environment
    · Experience with SQL statement tuning and customization
    · Experience with REST APIs for two-way data exchange
    · Experience with bash shell script development for automating routine tasks
    · Experience with basic installation and maintenance of LAMP server environments

    Additionally, your candidacy will be greatly enhanced by knowledge of any of the following:

    · BuddyPress plug-in development
    · CiviCRM development
    · Amazon Web Services
    · Symfony or CakePHP frameworks
    · Fedora digital object repository
    · Apache Solr or ElasticPress
    · A thorough understanding of the principles of good UX design
