Digital Humanities Initiative

The CUNY Digital Humanities Initiative (CUNY DHI), launched in Fall 2010, aims to build connections and community among those at CUNY who are applying digital technologies to scholarship and pedagogy in the humanities. All are welcome: faculty, students, and technologists, experienced practitioners and beginning DHers, enthusiasts and skeptics.

We meet regularly on- and offline to explore key topics in the Digital Humanities, and share our work, questions, and concerns. See our blog for more information on upcoming events (it’s also where we present our group’s work to a wider audience). Help edit the CUNY Digital Humanities Resource Guide, our first group project. And, of course, join the conversation on the Forum.

  • Wiki-Gangs of New York: Local History Editathon

    Hi All —

An event of interest from NYPL (http://www.nypl.org/events/programs/2012/04/21/wiki-gangs-nyc-local-history-editathon):

    Saturday, April 21, 2012, 11 a.m. – 5 p.m.

What neighborhood do you call home? Where are the boundary lines? How long has it been a neighborhood, and what is its history?

Is your neighborhood included in Wikipedia?

Whether your home is Hell’s Kitchen, Roosevelt Island, Tottenville, Mott Haven, DUMBO or Far Rockaway… come and represent your neighborhood. Use historical records and maps and learn how to edit Wikipedia to make it better for everyone.

The event will take place in the Berger Forum (Room 227), stay for the entire afternoon or drop in at any time between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. Bring your own laptop if possible; laptops will also be available to check out with your library card. NYPL librarians will be on hand to provide information and instruction on using our research collections. Volunteer Wikipedians will be present to provide support and instruction on editing Wikipedia. Advanced wiki editing skills not required; passion for NYC history and culture highly recommended!

The emphasis will be on improving content related to New York City neighborhoods and history though volunteers may work on whatever they choose. If you don’t have a library card, start the application process online and pick up your card on Saturday. If you don’t have a Wikipedia account, create one before Saturday so you can get started editing right away.

RSVP is suggested but not required. Sign up here or add your name to the project page.

This event is jointly organized by the Irma and Paul Milstein Division of United States History, Local History and Genealogy, the Lionel Pincus and Princess Firyal Map Division, NYPL Reference and Research Services, and NYPL Labs.
