Digital Humanities Initiative

The CUNY Digital Humanities Initiative (CUNY DHI), launched in Fall 2010, aims to build connections and community among those at CUNY who are applying digital technologies to scholarship and pedagogy in the humanities. All are welcome: faculty, students, and technologists, experienced practitioners and beginning DHers, enthusiasts and skeptics.

We meet regularly on- and offline to explore key topics in the Digital Humanities, and share our work, questions, and concerns. See our blog for more information on upcoming events (it’s also where we present our group’s work to a wider audience). Help edit the CUNY Digital Humanities Resource Guide, our first group project. And, of course, join the conversation on the Forum.

Experiments in Extra-Institutional Education, April 11th

  • **forgive cross posting**

Please join us for a conversation with protagonists from Anhoek School, Brooklyn Brainery, Brooklyn Institute for Social Research, Bruce High Quality Foundation University, Machine Project, Mildred’s Lane, New York Arts Practicum, NYC Resistor, Occupy University, School of Missing Studies (SMS), SOMA Summer, The Public School, and Trade School.

Education outside of a traditional classroom is on the rise. Again. Spurred on by DIY culture, a tidal wave of student debt, and changes in technology, new non-traditional learning scenarios are emerging in many academic disciplines.

Moving beyond questioning whether these alternative spaces can produce meaningful learning, this roundtable seeks to bring together artists, educators, and scholars to present case studies of their experiments in this area, discuss why this is happening now, and explore the future of creative learning outside of the conventional classroom.

Some of the questions we seek answers to are: How is learning different in this model? What kind of social and cultural formations are possible in a DIY model that are not possible in a traditional classroom? Can non-accredited, unofficial and transitory programs replace the cultural capital aggregation and discursive community building that lies at the core of the contemporary school? What is the importance of some form of traditional or non-traditional accreditation in this process?

  • Hello Everyone.

Interest in the event has been high, and we are trying to prepare for a potential overflow room with a simulcast. We are working on the mechanics of that, but it may require some assistance. Is there anyone who is planning on going to the event that doesn’t mind helping out if we need someone to either operate camera (possibly just a laptop webcam) and/or facilitate the livestream in the overflow room?

Message me on the CAC or via email michael @t mandiberg d0t com

    Thanks all!

    Michael
