GISc Research Assistant Position @ The Climate Justice Hub

  • Hello all, posting this great part-time GISc job opportunity for CUNY grad students, on behalf of Prof. Juliana Maantay. Contact her if you are interested!

    Research Assistant

The Climate Justice Hub, a collaboration between CUNY and the New York City Environmental Justice Alliance, has a research assistant opening for a master’s or doctoral student who has a strong background in Geographic Information Science, and an interest or expertise in food justice / food sovereignty issues.

This position involves research on food sovereignty potential in the neighborhood of Sunset Park, Brooklyn, by analyzing possible connections to upstate farmers with a proposed local food hub in Sunset Park, and utilization of other land uses conducive to promoting food sovereignty, such as urban agriculture on roof tops, indoor hydroponics, and so forth.  This part of the project will mainly focus on the identification and mapping of sites in Sunset Park to facilitate food sovereignty (i.e., Optimal Site Selection/Site Suitability Analysis), in support of the findings of these two research questions:  What opportunities and barriers exist to siting a food distribution hub in the industrial waterfront?  And how can food sovereignty work in Sunset Park to help diversify food resources and improve food security in the city?

The research assistant will work 5 to 6 hours per week for approximately 4 to 6 months, with a start date no later than May.  The salary is $50.00 per hour, and the work will primarily be done remotely, with occasional in-person meetings.  Current enrollment in a CUNY graduate program is required.  Please contact Prof. Juliana Maantay for further info or to express your interest in the position.  Juliana.maantay@lehman.cuny.edu
