    Digital Media Manager

    A digital media specialist with experience in social justice communications.

    The Digital Media Manager will be part of a three-person comms team. This person is focused on organizing all of our digital media content (video, audio, photography, illustrations, some text and ads) internally and then publishing that content for our key audiences on the appropriate platforms. This role is for someone who is excited and skilled at social listening and expanding our audiences – New Yorkers who want to support many different movements for social justice.

    North Star Fund is a social justice fund that supports grassroots organizing led by communities of color building power in New York City and the Hudson Valley. We also organize people across race and class to give in support of social justice movements. We also offer year-round programming to help organizers build and sustain their work.

    This position is full-time, exempt. The Digital Media Manager will report to the communications director and will regularly partner with other staff.

    Responsibilities

    The Digital Media Manager will drive the creative execution of North Star Fund digital content for our website and social channels in coordination with the rest of the communications team and other North Star Fund staff. This includes:

    • Creating Strategic and Creative Content for Our Digital Channels
    • Leading the process to identify content for North Star Fund channels that engages our audiences by highlighting our unique role in philanthropy and the work of our grantees.
    • Listening/curating social content from our allies in philanthropy, our grantees and creators that are relevant to our staff and audiences.
    • Coordinating and producing text, visual and video content for our website, Instagram, LinkedIn, Facebook and YouTube channels.
    • Monitoring and responding to the schedule for content as outlined in our internal editorial calendar (Airtable) and project management system (Asana).
    • Managing Contractors and Digital Assets
    • Sharing in assigning and managing current North Star Fund communications contractors (including photographers, videographers, designers, interpreters, captioners and translators) on projects in coordination with other Comms Team members.
    • Collecting and organizing digital assets generated by staff and contractors (images, video, transcripts and other text content) so they’re available for use by the Communications Team and other North Star Fund staff in outgoing comms.
    • Tracking budget line items related to digital content projects and consultants.
    • Updating the Strategy
    • Setting benchmarks for success (engagement and growth) on key social platforms and monitor progress on those benchmarks.
    • Regularly review analytics and subjective feedback on content so that we can improve the effectiveness of our communications.
    • Providing Accessibility Support
    • Support accessibility of our content and events for users across physical abilities, using plain language, supporting multilingual communication and providing content in multiple formats as much as possible.
    • Connecting with Grantees and Peers
    • Provide support for capacity-building work with grantees and peers in philanthropy as appropriate.
    • Supporting Strong Organizational Culture
    • Contribute to a safe, healthy, collaborative, and productive team culture.
    • Attend and contribute to internal staff and team meetings as well as retreats when needed.
    • Engage in and help to shape the organization’s strategic planning.

    Required Skills

    • Deep social justice values and a demonstrated commitment to the practice of racial justice, inclusion, and community-driven change
    • Fluency with related concepts around intersectionality, structural, institutional, and internalized racism
    • Knowledge of and commitment to grassroots organizing led by communities of color
    • Resilience, flexibility, humility, self-awareness, and a sense of humor
    • At least two years of experience with digital content creation and monitoring of social media platforms to advance social justice
    • Excellent multi-tasking and problem-solving skills
    • Excellent collaboration and communication skills
    • Exceptional project management ability, including communications planning in a nonprofit setting, with a collaborative approach to all parties that reflects our values
    • Ability to generate and curate content within the framework of an editorial calendar and style guide
    • Proficiency with online analytics tools for multiple social channels including Google Analytics, Facebook Insights, YouTube Analytics and related tools
    • Proficiency with standard office software (such as Word, Excel or Google Worksuite), video conferencing platforms (Zoom or Meet), Internal communications platforms (Slack, Microsoft Teams)
    • Familiarity with social media listening or scheduling tools such as HootSuite, Sprout Social, Meltwater or other related platforms
    • Familiarity with content management systems such as Airtable, GatherContent, WordPress or Vimeo

    Desired Skills

    • Familiarity with HTML or strong skills with pagebuilder platforms such as the Divi platform
    • Some visual design skills or familiarity with CRAP approach to design
    • Ability to coach and mentor others in digital content creation

    Physical Requirements 

    • Must be able to work at a computer screen for several hours a day.
    • Must be able to meet with a wide range of people, including grantee organizations and North Star Fund supporters, in person and/or via teleconferencing. This position requires curating visual content from grantees including print materials and photography collections.
    • Occasional evening and weekend events as needed.
    • Light lifting for in-person events may be required, but accommodations will be made as necessary for the safety and well-being of all employees.

    Compensation 

    • The salary for this position is $85,881 in accordance with North Star Fund’s compensation structure. North Star Fund offers generous benefits that include 100% premium paid for medical, dental, and vision insurance; a 403(b) retirement plan with an employer contribution, a work-from-home stipend, flex-time, vacation and holidays.     Additional Information 

    • North Star Fund uses a 32-hour work week for full-time employees, with normal work days running Monday through Thursday. Evening and weekend work is sometimes required. We currently use a hybrid work model: we work from home and have an office in midtown Manhattan. We have not yet set a date for a return to our physical office for in-person full-time work.

    Residency 

    • All staff are required to periodically attend in-person meetings and events in New York City and the Hudson Valley.  Applicants must live in the Hudson Valley or New York City or be within a one-hour commute to these areas.
