The City University of New York (CUNY) has been a beacon of accessible higher education as the people’s university for generations of working class and low-income New Yorkers. However, repeated patterns of disinvestment threaten to undermine CUNY’s ability to remain one of NYC’s greatest public goods. At the same time, gaping inequities in higher education between elite private institutions and public universities like CUNY have grown starker. In addition to the wealth-generating capacity provided by the substantial endowments of private universities in New York City, every year, New York gives major private universities a large subsidy: a real estate tax exemption worth hundreds of millions of dollars.

Job Description:

We seek a full-time Campaign Director to organize students across CUNY, Columbia, and NYU campuses to create pressure and support for winning investments from NYU and Columbia for CUNY. The campaign is expected to launch in February 2024. The Campaign Director will develop and coordinate a student-centered, cross-campus organizing effort for higher education equity, building on existing student organizing efforts on CUNY, and private university campuses. The position will sit within the Public Science Project of the CUNY Graduate Center.

The ideal candidate will be an experienced and skilled organizer and campaign director, passionate about educational equity, ready to lead a multi-faceted city-wide campaign and recruit and coordinate an active student organizing committee. Demonstrated experience directing organizing campaigns, building relationships, and developing leaders is ideal. Experience with student organizing and knowledge of the landscape of higher education in New York City, especially CUNY, is preferred.

Responsibilities include:

• Develop campaign strategy, in collaboration with strategic advisors and coalition partners (including elected leaders and union representatives), that utilizes varied tactics to escalate public and political pressure on private universities; bottom-line this campaign
• Coordinate cross-campus student-centered campaign, including the creation of opportunities to thoughtfully consider issues of educational inequality in higher education and opportunities for organizing, popular education, and dialogue across the CUNY, NYU, and Columbia university communities
• Recruit and coordinate a cross-campus student organizing committee and organize student leaders at CUNY, NYU, and Columbia
• Participate in weekly supervision meetings
• Facilitate regular meetings with strategic advisors and coalition partners
• Build additional support for investments in CUNY with local community organizations across the five boroughs, as well as faculty and alumni groups at all three universities
• Utilize social media, university publications, postering and other media to build and advance the campaign
• Communicate with key stakeholders, funders, and/or press as needed

Compensation and Schedule: This is a full-time salaried 2-year position at $65-75,000/year with a generous benefits package administered by the Fund for the City of New York.
