• I’ve attached the introductory chapter to Rob Nixon’s book Slow Violence and the Environmentalism of the Poor, which I read a couple years back and wanted to return to in context of works I’ve read since then. I’m particularly drawn to Nixon’s re-formulation of Mary Louise-Pratt’s concept of “planetary consciousness” which she describes in terms of European expansion but that Nixon appropriates to consider how we can envision processes of violence vast in scale and extending across time (i.e. nuclear waste). I’m trying to put Nixon in conversation with thinkers such as Sylvia Wynter and Walter Mignolo whose works also attempt to trace global inter-connectivity.
