This was just a sample of a paper from 1790’s Grenada I pulled while looking through the Caribbean Newspaper Database. I was more interested in the database itself than this particular paper, but it was interesting to see the advertisement for a “catoptric” show of illusions in which Signor Falconi displays the “terrors of nature in miniature” by producing the imitation of thunder. The ad also references the “American philosopher Dr. Franklin.” I think the colonial interest in the mastery of nature is of relevance here.
