• This nugget does not hold any particular research value for me. I just thought it was kind of a sweet and strange snapshot of Foucault as a professor and looking goofy wearing a cowboy hat. I found it on the website (pretty much the equivalent of an academic fan site) michel-foucault.com, which has a large gallery of Foucault photos and some other resources on Foucault’s key concepts and body of work. According to the website, the photo was taken while Foucault was teaching a philosophy seminar at UC Berkley in ’83. I’m curious what the story is behind the students gifting Foucault a cowboy hat. The photographer was apparently Paul Rabinow an anthropologist whose work on knowledge production, epistemology and power relations are explicitly influenced by Foucault’s ideas on the same.
