• This 1993 article by Caroline Woodward strikes as still very contemporary — not necessarily due to her argument, but rather the way in which she writes her own process of reading and discovery into the text of the article. Here, she uses a little known and hard to find text, The Travel Adventures of Madame de Richelieu (I’ve only found it on microfilm so far), to address the invisibility of lesbian desire in mainstream 18th century literature. Indeed, she points to a number of points of innuendo or potential, but also points to the importance of intimate friendships as such at the time.
