• At a certain point I realized I was reading so many “againsts” – Against Witness, Against Gentrification, and perhaps most importantly this – “Against Students.” I think Ahmed speaks to a lot of important issues to do with teaching, addressing “difficult issues,” and pinning the failures of institutions onto students. I enjoyed reading this as a way to process and consider the dynamics of an experience I had while teaching at Baruch last year – – I overheard an older male professor in the cubicle near me yelling at a female student, who was audibly sobbing (this had become a recurring event). As I was leaving after a long day of grading and my own student meetings, he urgently grabbed me in the hall (“excuse me, Miss!”) – to “apologize,” and explain that “she was a very sensitive student – and just not very bright.”
