• I came across this essay in American literature by Robert Reid-Pharr while browsing literary criticism on Samuel R. Delany. I’ve been interested in how science fiction and specifically science fiction by Black authors such as Delany, Octavia Butler and Nalo Hopkinson explore alternative forms of relationality and post-human possibilities in future worlds. Reid-Pharr’s article presents a reading that resonates with these interests though oriented around the similarities between the history of trans-Atlantic enslavement and the AIDS epidemic. I was also very much drawn in by Reid-Pharr’s lively and provocative style of literary criticism.
