Abortion

Abortion is a medical or surgical procedure that intentionally ends a pregnancy before an embryo or fetus is born(Gale). It was legalized in 1973 by the Roe vs. Wade trails. The case was brought in front of the supreme court by a woman who wanted to challenge Taxas law making abortion illegal unless it is an order from the  doctor. She argued that the law was a violation of her 1st,4th,5th,and 14th amendments. The court eventually took her side of the case concluding that is was a violation of her human rights. A woman is allowed to have an abortion within the first term of her pegnance before the embryo is formed.

The topic of abortion is very contraversal because of the culture and ethical reasoning behing different groups of people. Meaning that some people are against it because of their religious practice, or some think that the embryo is a living thing the moment the female finds out that she is pregnant. That killing it would go against moral beliefs. Reason of Abortion varies based on the experience a women has when concieving the child. One of the main reasons a women may want to get an abortion is if she raped or  if she got pregnant at a young age and is not ready to take care of another living been. Another reason is if the female continuously partake in sexual actives and refuses to use contraceptives to avoid pregnancy. They also may not have the proper resources to get the information about the protective contraceptives they might need.

In “Opportunities Lost: Barriers to increasing the use of effective contraceptives in the Philippines” Nagai explore one of the reasons why women get abortions. In the introduction of the study the authors gave an interesting statistic about a survey taking in  2013 the survey found that “maintenance of virginity until marriage was important for 83% of women aged 15-24, even though 14% of 15-19 year-olds and 49% of those aged 20-24 years experienced first sexual intercourse before marriage [6]. This social norm paradoxically discourages use of contraception by unmarried women”(Nagai). Nagai touched on the moral issues of the abortions in society. Although her statistics are for contraceptives they are related to the issues of abortions. This moral belief that unmarried women should not take contraceptives can lead the reader to make a claim about abortions; young females are sexaully actives and are not allowed to get protective contrecepitions they are more likely to get an abortion. Because the moral issue does not allow them to get contraceptives then are at a higher risk of an unintended pregnancy which then increase the chance of them getting an abortion.

In Mari Nagai’s Journal entry “Opportunities lost: Barriers to increasing the use of effective contraception in the Philippines” she focuses on contraceptives in the Philippines. Nagai argues that because of the poor conditions and the different moral views in the Philippines abortion rates are increasing; women in the the Philippines are very dependent on societal views. These norms prevent women from accessing services and using methods effectively. The high value placed on virginity at marriage discourages women from admitting sexual activity and inappropriate health concerns(Nagai). This causes the abortion rates to increase. Nagai’s audience is anyone who does not have access to the appropiate information on safe and protected sex in the Philipines. She has an inquisitive tone towards the issue of abortion in her study. Her tone helps the audience to gather the informations that they may need from the text. Nagai does not take a stance on abortion in her study; she just explains the causes on effect of abortion in the Philipines.

In “Abortion Pills  Should Be Everywhere” Farhad Manjoo gives reader a new view on the abortion accessablity.Manjoo hints that abortion may become more mainstream if the government continues to opose the issue. According to Manjoo there is an online market for abortion pills and any women who is desperate enough can have access to them. ManJoo writes “… restrictions on abortion pills are becoming increasingly difficult to enforce. Despite the F.D.A.’s restrictions, activists have created a robust online market that makes getting pills surprisingly easy” (Manjoo) to show that it does not take that much effect for a person to get the pills even though the F.D.A is against it. He also makes the claim that the abortions pills sold online uses some of the safest modern medicine in the world. Manjood also tells readers why the online market of the pills are blooming; Manjoo explores the issue of why women tend to buy the pills online instead of going to the clinics he writes “They don’t have funds, or they are six hours away from the clinic, or they don’t have transport, they have small kids, they live in cars, there are situations of domestic violence — it’s just really bad situations”(Manjoo). The online abortion pills are sometimes the safest method of a women have an abortion depending on her situation. The women  might what to hide the process or she might not have another choice like stated in the quote. He argues that abortion might as well be legal everywhere because it has become too big in the online market to stop or get rid of.

In “Abortion Pills Should Be Everywhere” Farhad Manjoo argues to make abortion legal because of the blooming of unline stores that sells abortion pill at at low cost. The targeted audience could be lawmakers because the news article repeatedly mention that abortion should just be legalived everywhere. Manjoo want to tell lawmakers that the more they press the issue of abortion the more the unline stores benefits because that is where people are going to get the help the can not get in the hospitals. His stance is that aborrtion should be legalized everywhere. Manjoo has an incredulous tone throughout the article. Readers can see this as they read through the article; Manjoo finds it hard to believe that abortion pill are so easy to get and yet the government wants to make it illegal.

In “When Your Rapist Demand Custody”  Michaela Haas encourages rape victims and victims of forced incestous relationship to continue to fight the laws that is set up to protect the rapist instead of the rape victim by sharing the experiences of women who have been through the same experience. Haas also explore the other side of the abortion spectrum that brings the question: what if the victim want to keep her baby? Are there laws to protect her? The author answer all these questions throughout the magazine article.

Hass has a somber tone toward the topic of abortion because even though she does not agree with abortions she believes that there should be exeptions to the case.  By using the personal testimonies of rape victims in her magazine article Haas makes her stance very clear; she support the claim that victims have a right to choose what they want to do with their babies and they should have full custody of them. Haas audience is the victims of  rape victims and victims of forced incestous relationship. She wants to encourage them to keep fighting the law so that can get a fair representative in court.

The website “National Abortion Federation” provide serve for safe and legal abortion methods. It provides information to individuals who are seeking an abortion and it give helpful clinics. It targets women who want an abortion or need information on abortions.  The tone of the foundations is very informative. The purpose is to provide clear information to women who think they are pregnant and want an abortion.

Abortion is a very controversail topic to deserver to be looked on from multiple prespectives, each article above looks on a different view of abortion. They all shed a different light on abortion depending on who the audience of the article is. The articles do all have one theme they all share and that is to inform people on the issue of abortion. Each article inform readers an a different issue in the abortion community.
