Academic Technology Research and Development Group

Welcome to the home of the CUNY Committee on Academic Technology Research and Development Group (CAT-R&D).

The mission of CAT-R&D is to research, test, and recommend new technologies from the perspective of classroom faculty needs and pedagogical effectiveness.

CAT-R&D exists to advance the field of academic technology by consulting with colleagues and groups developing new technologies, conducting classroom trials, and sponsoring programs. The goal is to provide independent evaluations using transparent criteria that are openly reported on the CUNY Academic Commons, at the annual CUNY IT conference, and to other bodies.

CAT-R&D fosters academic excellence by working with researchers, educators, and developers to create an academically enriching environment for students and faculty.
The CAT-R&D is to be known as the “skunkworks” and the reason for this can be found here

Where are we on Smart Classrooms in 2016?

  • Where are we on Smart Classrooms in 2016?
More and more faculty in CUNY are using classrooms equipped with a variety of information technology items. Although the exact inventory of equipment may vary they are called “smart classrooms”. More and more new hires are expecting that the classrooms they use will be so equipped. Faculty are being encouraged and supported in pedagogic reforms and innovations and the use of such rooms becomes more and more needed. So just where are we with providing for this need?
The UFS is conducting a survey of the CUNY units to determine this. CUNY would be better informed as to the progress being made having this information. There is a file posted to this forum titled “Smart Classroom Survey Request” and in it is what we have thus far(2-20-16) as reported by faculty. The data is not confirmed as yet. We will reach out to the CIO’s for final confirmation. The reports have it that the campuses range from as little as 29 percent equipped to 100 percent with several at the full amount.
Please contact us with updates and corrections concerning the status of your campus. Send to pepcorino@qcc.cuny.edu

    Thank you all.
