  • this same one-word sentence has been used addressing Assad by those who find his being in power beneficial or those who fear their lives.

Now this one could have a sexist reading to it.

The caption is again in Syrian and it reads:

“at the end, a woman has nobody but her children and no place but her home. signed by Hillary.”

Which of course indicates that the right place for a woman is her home with her husband and kids and not at work.

When an Arab sees this picture, s/he immediately thinks of a the illiterate uneducated woman, from a village, a very small town, or the suburbs of big cities, above 50, mostly a housewife with children (even though not necessarily), who has no room in her life for work or even to take care of herself in terms of appearance (she doesn’t go to the gym, she does not have a fashionable wardrobe, does not go to hairdressers…). It could also perhaps be associated with some specific countries in the Arab world. I don’t think this is a common imageĀ in Lebanon for example even though I may be wrong.
