Assistant Professor of History

Seiji Shirane is a historian of Japan at the City College of New York (CUNY). His first book is *Imperial Gateway: Colonial Taiwan and Japan’s Expansion in South China and Southeast Asia, 1895–1945* (Cornell University Press, 2022). His teaching and research interests include Japan’s empire, colonial Taiwan, and Japanese-Chinese relations. He has received support from the National Endowment for the Humanities, Fulbright, Social Science Research Council, and the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science.
