WordPress HELP!!

This group is for neophytes to WordPress who are trying to use it as a Bbd alternative and have questions that “everyone knows” the answers to already. Except those who don’t. Quick answers to specific questions is what I envision here, so we can set up our courses without spending hours trying to find out a simple answer. Of course, we NEED EXPERTS in the group to actually answer the questions. All experts and neophytes please join this group!!

Mobile Edition – CUNY Footer Auto-Fit Issue

  • Posted by Anonymous on

i am testing a blog i set up to make sure it views okay in a mobile web browser (iPhone 5, Safari) and noticed that the CUNY footer is not auto-fitting — it stays pretty wide.

    this is my blog: http://activistwomen.commons.gc.cuny.edu/

are there plans to make the CUNY footer in the mobile web version auto-fit a bit better so users don’t have to scroll to the right to see the info?

i am also having a problem where my pages (About, Technical) are not showing up in the Menu, but it might also be issues with my theme (Current Theme: Continuum by WooThemesVersion 1.0.0) and/or my plugin (WPtouch).

any help on either issue, much appreciated!

i actually disabled the WPtouch plugin and now the site looks better but new problem:

    a. site title is scrunched

    b. images are not auto-fitting

Hi Erika – Welcome to the Commons! I took a look at your site, and I didn’t see any issue with the site title being scrunched. Can you describe a little more – are you viewing it on a mobile device? (By the way, if you want your site to be responsive to different devices, you might want to use the Twenty Twelve theme, which I think is currently our only responsive theme.)

In terms of images not auto-fitting, I am not sure exactly the issue. I saw two possible – the full size images don’t span the whole width, and the thumbnail is getting chopped off.

For the first one, you might what to go the Settings>>Media and adjust the “Large” size so that the width of every new image will span your page width.

For thumbnails, I think the image you set as a featured image for the post is not square, and is probably wider than it is tall. Woo themes generally have a setting to adjust the size of the thumbnail they display – I can help you with that if you need. If you think most of your thumbnails will be landscape – you can adjust, and they will look better.

    Hope this helps.

hi scott! thanks for the quick response.

unless you are viewing the site on a mobile device you can’t see the problems. i was testing it on an iphone 5 using safari, with the above described problems.

i decided against using the Woo interface because of too many problems like this — though i love their customizations like the favicons and stuff.

that is weird that Twenty Twelve is the only responsive to mobile sites — i thought that was a built-in WordPress feature for all themes.

i am very lazy, don’t want to have to manually adjust all of my images. so i’m going to test out the PressWork theme and see if that gives me my lazy image (no resizing) requirement. — [EDIT: actually now i see that PressWork has been retired so i am going to look for another theme that autofits images. ugh.]

your post was super helpful. i really really appreciate it, am so glad for this Commons interface!

    Hi All —

We actually have multiple responsive themes. To see them, please go to
Appearances > Themes on your blog dashboard and search installed
themes for “responsive.” You should see six themes listed there –
Clean, Luna, Oxygen, Presswork, simpleX, and Twenty Twelve

    Matt

    thanks for listing these matt.

i was wondering if you knew: is there a way to take the PressWork header off the PressWork theme? just curious. PressWork was looking like a good option for me but that was bugging me.

i wish it was still being actively supported. looks like they have stopped working on it. http://presswork.me/

my original question about the CUNY footer being so much wider than the blogs is still an issue when i look at all of these themes on my iphone 5 using the safari (default) browser.

is this something that can be adjusted possibly?

maybe i’m old skool here to be having this wishlist item for an iphone browser versus ipad, etc. but aesthetically this footer issue on my phone is (a) aesthetically annoying and (b) minimizes the functionality of the cool CUNY footer

    Hi Erika,

Yes, this is something we can work on (though we won’t be able to
resolve the issue immediately). Thanks for the report and we’ll update
this thread when the issue is fixed.

Thanks Matt – I didn’t realize we had five other responsive themes! Great news.

@Matt — thanks. really appreciate it!

i’m sort of shocked that there are so few responsive themes — as i assume a lot of people access blogs on mobile devices.

    just to follow up:

if anyone is looking for WordPress themes where images auto-adjust to fit within the themes, out of those available today (24 Feb 2013), i checked all of the themes — the following themes will auto-fit images:

    Brunelleschi
    Cleanr
    Cloudy
    Oxygen
    PressWork
    simpleX
    Thematic
    Twenty Eleven
    Twenty Twelve
    WP-Creativix

Thanks, Erika. And just FYI, we are always happy to take user requests
for additional themes to be added to the system, though we put all
themes through a code review and try to keep the overall number of
themes available on the site reasonable.

thanks Matt. that’s great to know!

    Hi Erika,
Just to let you know we had some changes in the works for the footer previously and now we will be looking at them to make sure they work with responsive themes.

To directly answer your question about the PressWork header: I’m assuming you mean the part with their logo and tagline. You can remove that by going into the settings (triangle icon) and then deleting the text in the space that says Logo Image URL (image attached). You could replace it with your own too if you like.

It can take a minute to get used to PressWork since the editing is done on the page itself instead of in the dashboard (although I think you can turn off that feature if you like). Post back if you have any other questions.
    Best,
    Chris
