Hi,

I’m trying to embed a Google Docs slideshow into a blog post. I made the presentation public, and Google Docs is telling me that this is the code to paste in to embed it:

Oops, pasting in this code here doesn’t work. I’ll try it this way, changing all the bracket thingies to parentheses. Imagine they’re the bracket thingies instead.

When I paste that code into HTML edit mode and then go back to Visual edit mode, I see an outline of where the slideshow should appear. However, when I preview the post, it doesn’t appear, and when I save the draft, the code disappears.

Does anyone know what’s going on or how to fix this?

Hi Jill,

I love the crash course on Open Access Publishing presentation — great work! Unfortunately, I don’t believe the Commons supports embedding Google Doc presentations. I think that since the Commons is a multisite installation direct embedding is a security risk. That being said, there are other ways you could embed your presentation. I would suggest looking over the How to Embed A Presentation codex page for some other options: http://codex.commons.gc.cuny.edu/blogs/how-to-embed-a-presentation/

Hi everyone,

Resurrecting this because we’re now trying to use Ray’s new plugin to embed a Google Presentation and it’s not showing up. We enabled the plugin and entered this as the shortcode:

Any ideas? Or has anyone had similar issues? Many thanks!

I think your link is wrong – I think it should begin with https: Maybe you didn’t “Publish to the Web”? Here is some documentation for Ray’s plugin – http://codex.commons.gc.cuny.edu/2012/08/12/google-docs-embed-plugin-now-available-with-commons-1-4/#comment-84 – Let me know if it doesn’t work and we can further.

Thanks Scott! I added the https and it does seem to be published to the web — I wonder is there anyone that’s using this successfully and can take a screenshot of the dashboard so I can be sure I’m doing this right? Thanks!

Thanks Matt! Very strange, ours is formatted the same and still not showing up. Ours is a Gdocs presentation — wondering if that makes a difference? We’ll keep noodling on it.

Hi Maura – I just did a quick test – created a Google Docs presentation – and embedded it, and it worked fine. So I think it does support presentations.

I think that you are using an old version of Google Docs and that the link you sent requires the user to be logged in to Google which may not be compatible with the Ray’s plugin. When I tried your link directly in a browser it asked me to login before it showed the presentation.

I created a new Google presentation and got the link it was in the format of

https://docs.google.com/presentation/pub?id=xxxxx
Yours is in
http://docs.google.com/present/view?id=xxxx

I made a copy of the presentation you liked to and it gave me a note that said “this presentation you will soon be upgraded to the new version of Google Docs” and then the a link to the URL above about the new docs.

In there’s a link to these instructions on importing your slides to a new presentation:

I followed those instructions with my copy of your document and then published to the web and added to Ray’s shortcode and it worked. Here is what worked for me
[gdoc link=”https://docs.google.com/presentation/pub?id=1mGpQLx3MFBXQPNbpph11t2HZFwR570lukNIFSQmu5HU&start=false&loop=false&delayms=3000″ height=”800″]
 You can use that or go through the process yourself and import the slides to a new presentation.
