Beginning this fall, a pilot program funded by a grant from the Mellon Foundation will pair doctoral students from the Graduate Center with selected students in the Macaulay Honors College for individual mentoring sessions that focus on writing. These undergraduates are among the best in the university and will be nominated by MHC faculty. The goal is to work with them so that their written expression reflects the talent and intelligence they already possess and to enable them to become more sophisticated and fluent writers who have mastered the discourse of academic writing while still maintaining voices of their own.

All Mellon Mentors will work closely with Professor Sondra Perl, a nationally known expert on the teaching of writing. There will be one 4 hour orientation meeting in late September followed by once a month meetings at the Grad Center which will focus on writing theory and pedagogy.

All CUNY doctoral students are welcome to apply. Priority will be given to students with experience in teaching writing.

If chosen, you will be expected to spend 5 hours per week working directly with individual students (in scheduled mentoring sessions) on one of the eight Macaulay campuses within CUNY.

The pay-rate will be $40 per hour ($3600 total compensation for the academic year) and does not preclude your taking other teaching assignments.

Applications are due August 1, 2016, at 11:59 PM. Applicants will be notified by August 20.
