In recent times, Ukraine and Russia have fought for control of the border. An immense problem that has risen is the lack of training provided to the Ukrainian troops to help to prepare them for what might be soon be an all-out war between the two countries. One possible solutions that can be used to help correct this problem is complimentary military training of the troops by their allies such as Canada and The United States. The U.S. News and World Report Journalist, Paul Shinkman (2016) asserts that Canada’s choice to provide a limited amount of resources impacts the Ukrainians’ ability to fully prepare for war. CBS News’s, Cami McCormick (2016) proclaims that the U.S.’s aid to the Ukrainian troops will increase likelihood of them surviving. The allies providing aid in training the Ukrainian troops will help them to flourish during these difficult times at war.

Shinkman (2016) argues that although Canada has chosen to withhold the use of heavy artillery, they still provide the Ukrainian troops with mass amounts of handheld weaponry to help them to survive. Shinkman (2016) declares that before its allies came to aid, the Ukrainians were using weaponry created during the early 1900’s. The troops were not thoroughly educated on how to act during these times of war. Canada provided the troops with new techniques and weaponry to help prepare them for their fight. McCormick (2016) also highlighted that the Ukraine troops have a higher chance at survival due to the aid of the U.S. The U.S. helped to modernize the tactics used by the Ukrainians on the battlefield. Without the aid of the U.S. the majority of the Ukrainian troops would see battle before they were even properly trained to fight in a war, causing more casualties that necessary. With the aid of the U.S. and Canada, Ukraine is more likely than before to survive the war efforts against the Russian forces.

Dear Stephanie, Thanks so much for sharing what appears to be a draft for a potential literature review on military training in Ukraine. You note instances of US and Canada helping Ukraine through modernized tactics and weapons, but I wondered if you might also include why this particular solution of arming Ukraine is such an effective one. Consider the opposition that might say if we arm Ukraine, we are basically sanctioning war between the two countries. How do you deal with their concerns?
