Spring 2025 scholcomm peer mentoring program

  • For anyone who may have missed the announcement on CULIBS (and please let us know if the deadline doesn’t work for you — we can likely adjust it):

    The Office of Library Services is launching a new peer mentoring program to support full-time library faculty at CUNY who are interested in building knowledge and skills in newer areas of librarianship and/or areas not heavily represented around CUNY libraries. The new program is being piloted in Spring 2025 in collaboration with the Graduate Center. This first iteration of the program will focus on scholarly communication librarianship and will be led by Jill Cirasella, the GC’s Scholarly Communication Librarian and University Liaison.

    What is scholarly communication? ACRL defines “scholarly communication” as “the system through which research and other scholarly writings are created, evaluated for quality, disseminated to the scholarly community, and preserved for future use.” So, in addition to journal and book publishing, scholarly communication encompasses such topics as:

    • The meaning and importance of the so-called “scholarly record”;
    • Interrelationships among access, accessibility, description, and discoverability of scholarship;
    • Unique/persistent identifiers for works, authors, and other entities;
    • Types of peer review and common problems with peer review;
    • Different paths to open access, their funding models, and their implications for equity and bibliodiversity;
    • Uses and misuses of research metrics, and alternatives to such metrics;
    • Retractions, authorship disputes, and other issues in publication ethics;
    • How copyright law (including fair use and the Digital Millennium Copyright Act) intersects with the creation, dissemination, and use of scholarly works;
    • Publication contracts and licenses, including Creative Commons licenses;
    • Indigenous data sovereignty and Indigenous intellectual property;
    • Implications of artificial intelligence tools for authorship, reviewing, publishing, copyright, etc.

    What will the mentoring program look like?

    • The program will last for the duration of the Spring 2025 semester (January 25–May 22).
    • There will be one hour-long online group meeting each week (not including spring break).
    • Participants can expect to spend approximately one additional hour each week on readings, videos, or other activities.
    • The exact line-up of topics will depend on participants’ interests, needs, and pre-existing knowledge.
    • Participants will be expected to contribute to at least one deliverable tied to the mentoring program. Possible deliverables include (a) participating in a panel about the experience, (b) co-authoring an article about the experience, (c) contributing to a scholarly communication LibGuide, or (d) chairing or co-chairing the LACUNY Scholarly Communications Roundtable in a future year.

    How to apply:

    • Complete the mentoring program application form (accessible after logging in to your CUNY account), which includes several short-answer questions and also requires two statements:
      • A detailed statement of interest from the applicant (300-400 words; see full instructions on application form).
      • A brief letter (signed and on letterhead) from your chief librarian indicating their support for your participation in the program, including their approval to engage in all activities (attending meetings, reading/viewing materials, completing assignments, etc.) on work time.
    • Applications are due Monday, December 23.
    • Applicants will be notified if they have been accepted into the program by Friday, January 10.
