At the end of each year, we post a short summary of what the Emerging Technologies Committee did over the past year. We held 6 events this year, including 4 hands-on workshops, 1 roundtable discussion, and 1 hack day:

Planning meeting, September 11, 2015 at BMCC. We introduced ourselves and discussed topics we wanted to focus on for the year.

Intro to Web Scraping with Python, October 22, 2015 at the GC. Susan Steinman led us through a hands-on demo of a web scraping project.

Build Your Own Twitter Bot, December 15, 2015 at John Jay. Robin Davis (JJ) and Mark Eaton (KBCC) introduced several sample bots, which participants modified to generate and post tweets.

Mapbox and CartoDB Hack Day, January 29, 2016 at the GC. Julia Pollack (Bronx) showed us how to use Mapbox, CartoDB, and OpenNYC data to make some maps.

(Questioning) Authority in Wikimedia Projects, April 15, 2016 the GC. Megan Wacha (OLS) and Chanitra Bishop (Hunter) introduced authority control in Wikimedia Projects, with a focus on Wikidata.

Tableau Workshop, April 29, 2016 at the GC. Joan Kolarik (OLS) and Ray Schwartz covered building a dashboard in Tableau, techniques for selecting and extracting data, and how to use an existing Tableau template.
