GIS / Mapping Working Group

The Geographic Information Systems (GIS) / Mapping working group is a network of CUNY students, faculty and staff who are interested in sharing methods and techniques, and finding support from others about ways GIS can be used to further research and teaching.

The GIS/Mapping working group is part of a GC Digital Initiatives program designed to create collaborative communities of Digital Fellows, CUNY-wide graduate students, staff, and faculty to meet regularly and share their areas of interest. The working groups provide a sustained, supportive environment to learn new skills, share familiar skills, and collaborate with both the Digital Fellows and the CUNY digital community.

If you are using Geographic Information Systems or other mapping technologies in your teaching and/or research, or if you are interested in mapping your data, or using GIS technology to analyze/visualize your data, we invite you to join the GIS/Mapping working group.

Peruse our mapping resource bank here: https://commons.gc.cuny.edu/groups/gis-working-group/docs/gis-mapping-resources/

For the Spring 2024 semester, the GIS/Mapping working group will meet in the Digital Scholarship Lab, Room 7414, every other Tuesday from 2-4 p.m. Check out our event calendar for the specific meeting dates. Please stop by!

GIS Applications in Aquatic Ecology and Evolutionary Biology

An NSF supported three day Aquatic GIS Training Workshop will be offered at Saint Louis University on July 31 – August 2, 2019. A general goal of this workshop is to train and establish an interactive group of researchers and educators applying GIS techniques in freshwater systems. Applicants with all levels of GIS experience are welcome; however, the workshop will be presented for aquatic biologists with little to no background in GIS techniques. This is our ninth offering of this workshop.

The tentative schedule of topics includes: 1) basic acquisition and manipulation of GIS data, 2) GIS data sources for freshwater research, 3) quantification of environmental attributes of species’ habitat use at multiple spatial scales, 4) species distribution modeling, and 5) application of hydrologic data to studies of freshwater systems. The majority of the training will be conducted using ArcGIS. Computer space will be provided for each attendee.

The workshop is open to Faculty, Research Scientists, Postdoctoral Researchers, and Graduate Students conducting research in freshwater systems. There is no cost for the workshop; however, participants are responsible for a course book, meals, travel, and lodging. Details are available at http://knouftlab.weebly.com/aquatic-gis-workshop.html

To apply, please email a statement of application including a brief description of your research interests (maximum 1 page) and a C.V. to Dr. Jason Knouft at aquaticgis@slu.edu <mailto:aquaticgis@slu.edu> by May 17, 2019. GIS experience is not a prerequisite for the workshop.
