The UF/IFAS Assessment of Non-native Plants ( (https://assessment.ifas.ufl.edu/) https://assessment.ifas.ufl.edu ) is seeking a GIS specialist/risk analyst to work with the Assessment in the development, validation, and implementation of species potential distribution models and invasive plant risk assessments.
The UF/IFAS Assessment uses literature-based assessment tools to evaluate the invasion status or risk of non-native species that occur in the state, new species proposed for introduction, and novel agricultural and horticultural selections, hybrids, and cultivars.
The candidate must have adequate experience with ArcGIS (developing models and generating maps) and an understanding of biological invasions and/or risk analysis (Master’s degree or equivalent experience required). Duties will include modifying the Proto3 GIS model used by APHIS-PPQ to improve species distribution predictions for Florida and the southeastern US, testing the models for accuracy, and conducting invasion risk assessments for non-native plants. More information about the risk assessment protocol and the GIS model can be found here: (https://www.aphis.usda.gov/plant_health/plant_pest_info/weeds/downloads/wra/wra-guidelines.pdf) https://www.aphis.usda.gov/plant_health/plant_pest_info/weeds/downloads/wra/wra-guidelines.pdf
This is a 1-year position made possible by funding from the Farm Bill Plant Protection Act (PPA) program Section 7721 program to strengthen the national infrastructure for pest detection and surveillance, identification, threat mitigation, and safeguard the nursery production system.
