Hello everyone, the opportunity below is open to GC faculty and anyone (including GC students) teaching at Hunter College. Please reach out to Prof. Michael Siller with questions.

    Dear Faculty,

I have the pleasure of inviting you and a small number of faculty to participate in an upcoming Teaching Scholarship Circle (TSC) entitled ‘Moving The Needle – Implementing Universal Design in Higher Education’. This small faculty group is hosted by Hunter’s Academic Center for Excellence in Research and Teaching (ACERT), and will meet four times over the course of the Spring 2016 semester. Meetings will be held on Wednesdays, between 3 and 5pm (meeting dates are: March 9, March 30, April 13, and May 4).

As you know, the student body at Hunter College is exceptionally diverse with regard to race, ethnicity, native language, culture, age, learning style, background knowledge, ability, gender, veteran status, and other characteristics. This TSC aims to support faculty who wish to proactively and incrementally re-design courses to be welcoming, usable, and accessible to students with a broad range of characteristics, including students with disabilities. Through reading, invited speakers, and discussion, faculty will learn about the principles and practices of Universal Design in higher education, and plan incremental changes in their own courses that give students (1) multiple ways of acquiring information and knowledge, (2) alternatives for demonstrating what they know, and (3) a range of opportunities to actively engage with the course content.

    Best wishes, Michael
