Friends of the Saints: The Hagiography Seminar

Public Group active 1 year, 8 months ago

The Friends of the Saints (FOS) is an informal workshop/discussion group of scholars dedicated to the study of hagiography, religious history, and comparative religion, founded over 20 years ago by the late Professor Jo Ann McNamara (formerly CUNY Hunter College). The group usually meets on the second Friday of the month during the CUNY academic year, and is open to all faculty, independent scholars, graduate students, and other interested persons in the metropolitan NYC area. Members of the group are invited to present on their latest research-in-progress, to reprise presentations given at academic conferences and seminars, to discuss new and notable publications in the field, and to visit related exhibits at NYC museums. The principal (but not exclusive) focus of the FOS group is Christian hagiography in the western Catholic, eastern Orthodox and Oriental traditions of the early Christian, medieval, through early modern periods. We also welcome presentations from persons interested in comparative hagiography and religious studies in other world religions, such as Islam, Hinduism, and Buddhism.
