Lab 2: Scientific Method

  •  Hypothesis

Motor vehicle on my block has become a major cause for air pollution in my borough.

    Observations

Air pollution from motor vehicles have being a major contribution gaseous pollutant in New York. Therefore, over a ten-year, Department of Health (DOH) will investigate the Bronx air quality along with rest of the other borough and measurement how clean the air is the environment. The DOH will also analyze and collected data from several highway roads that are in the Bronx to see if these highway roads are contributing more gaseous pollutant from there automobiles than the other boroughs.

    Analyze and interpret data

As the DOH team and scientists collect data around 35,000 miles from over 52 highways and parkways in New York City from automobiles over ten-year period, each year scientist will analyze the combustion emission data that are coming from cars to see how much the Earth climate changes such as: increasing warming or cooling in different places on the planet and how these changes are impacting the environment.

    Conclusions

In one DOH study, scientists discovered that many combustion emissions from cars are contributing to large scale increase in newborn baby developing asthma, making them quite vulnerable to the gaseous pollutant in the air. They also discovered that Bronx have more interstate highways than other boroughs that connected to other state outside of New York which make it more vulnerable to combustion emissions from cars.

    Results

Scientists like Kamar write up the results, send in the paper for peer review (a process in which other experts in the field anonymously critique the submission), and then those peers determine whether the information is correct and valuable enough to be published in an academic journal, such as Combustion Emissions or Earth and Planetary Science Letters. Then it becomes another contribution to the effect gaseous pollutant air have on the body, which evolves and grows stronger as scientists gather and confirm more evidence. Other scientists can take that information further by conducting their own studies to better understand harmful effect it has on human body.

    Question

    1. Why is New York air so pollute?
    2. How can we reduce combustion emission in the city, so that we have clean air in the environment?
    3. What are some of the steps we as people can implement to have a clean environment?
