    Hello colleagues–

I live in Jersey City and am involved with our Landmarks Conservancy. This would be a great project for anyone interested in history of our greater metro area. Please feel free to forward to your networks. I am also happy to answer questions about the position.

    Best,

    Jenny

Part-Time Researcher, Jersey City Landmarks Conservancy

    About the Organization:

Since its founding, the Jersey City Landmarks Conservancy (hereafter JCLC) has held tours to educate and inspire residents and visitors about the history of Jersey City, NJ. It has advocated at the state and local levels for the preservation of landmarks and has collaborated with neighborhood associations, churches and the other individuals and organizations to do so. The JCLC is faithful to the underlying belief that preservation is not simply about keeping old buildings standing, but rather incorporating historic resources into the vibrant and dynamic economic and cultural fabric that makes a great city. You can read more about us at http://www.jclandmarks.org/

    The Project:

With grant funding from the Hudson County History Partnership Program, the JCLC is planning to develop an innovative, online version of two of its popular neighborhood tours of Jersey City, NJ–one featuring the Heights neighborhood and the other featuring Bergen Hill. These online tours will be composed of podcasts, archival images, and maps. These two neighborhoods were chosen in part for their rich connections to two ethnic groups. The Bergen Hill tour will feature a discuss of the city’s rich African American heritage, in particular, the Black Power movement centered at the newly landmarked St. John’s Episcopal Church. The online tour of the Heights will showcase the German immigrant population of Jersey City, including a virtual tour of the now defunct beer gardens that once populated the neighborhood.

We are looking for a master’s or doctoral student with expertise in history, library science, literature, or the digital humanities to assist us in building these resources. Eligible candidates would have experience developing maps using GIS applications such as CartoDB, ArcGIS, or Leaflet; creating responsive design mobile sites; and assembling digital collections/archives using tools such as Omeka. The work would involve helping the JCLC board conceptualize the online tours, working with board members to record podcasts and to select images for the tours, using the appropriate mapping software to map landmark sites, and working with our web developers to make the sites accessible to a range of audiences. This work will take place from February to December 2017. Though some work could be done remotely, it will require that the researcher spent time both in Jersey City to meet with board members and to research in the NJ Room of the Jersey City Free Public Library.

    Salary:

We anticipate that this person would work for approximately 5 hours/week over the period of the grant, or about 44 weeks.

    $25 x 5 hours x 44 weeks = $5500

    Please send resumes/CVs and a letter of interest to jclandmarks@gmail.com by February 20, 2017 at 5:00 p.m.
