Postdoctoral Fellowship in Data Equity, Justice, and Policy, University of Michigan

The Science, Technology, and Public Policy Program at the Ford School of Public Policy, jointly with the Michigan Institute of Data Science and Department of Computer Science at the University of Michigan, invites applications for a postdoctoral fellow focused on curriculum development in data equity, justice, and policy. The fellow, who should hold a PhD in computer science, data science, or a related field, will receive formal training in the social, ethical, and policy dimensions of data and technology and help lead the reshaping the University of Michigan’s undergraduate computer science curriculum with justice and equity concerns at its core. Anticipated start date is January 2021, for a one-year appointment with renewal for a second year likely but contingent on performance and funding availability. The fellow can begin the position remotely. This position is funded by the grant, “Rethinking Computer Science Education: Bringing Public Interest Technology into Undergraduate and Postdoctoral Training” funded by the Public Interest Technology University Network and New Venture Fund. It is supervised by Professors Shobita Parthasarathy and H.V. Jagadish.

The funded project focuses on reworking University of Michigan’s undergraduate computer science curriculum to include sustained attention to social, moral, equity, and policy dimensions of data and technology with the help of a postdoctoral fellow who will themselves receive specialized training. The postdoctoral fellow will bridge academic units and develop expertise in the social, ethical, and policy dimensions of data and technology by: 1) taking courses in public policy, social sciences, and the humanities; 2) conducting research on integrating equity, justice, and policy concerns into higher education; and 3) working with our community partner, the Detroit Community Technology Project (DCTP), to learn about local concerns regarding AI and machine learning. The fellow will then help lead the effort to rethink University of Michigan’s undergraduate computer science curriculum. If the fellow is renewed for a second year, they will have the opportunity to teach a project-based course related to data equity, justice, and policy, developed in consultation with faculty advisors and DCTP. The position will prepare the fellow for a growing number of positions in data equity, ethical and responsible AI, and critical data studies across academia, industry, and government.

Required qualifications: Applicants should have a PhD in computer science, data science, information science, or a related field with demonstrated interest in the equity, justice, ethical and social dimensions of data or technology. They must have a PhD in hand at the time of appointment. Competitive candidates will have a successful research record and some teaching experience in the United States, even if only as a teaching assistant. Salary is USD $60,000 plus benefits. To apply, please send the following by email to Trisha Fountain (tvfount@umich.edu): • A cover letter articulating the applicant’s interest, qualifications, and preparation for the position (including relevant research, teaching, community engagement experience, and demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion); • A curriculum vitae; • A brief (less than 10,000 words) writing sample; • Names and contact information for three references. Review of applications will begin December 7, 2020 and continue until the position is filled. The University of Michigan is an AA/EO employer. Women and minorities are encouraged to apply.
