    NYCML\’18 Announcements: The New School\’s Maya Wiley to lead a keynote on digital equity; plus workshops, demos, and more…NYC Media Lab\’s biggest event of the year[nycmedialab.us2.list-manage.com]is just 4 weeks away. On Thursday, September 20th, The New School will host keynotes[nycmedialab.us2.list-manage.com]research presentations[nycmedialab.us2.list-manage.com], and a Demo Expo[nycmedialab.us2.list-manage.com] of 100 emerging media and technology projects. The following day on Friday, September 21st, NYU Kimmel Center center will welcome 16 workshops[nycmedialab.us2.list-manage.com]led by thought leaders from industry and university.

    In this newsletter, the Lab is pleased to share several program updates, including details on a special keynote from The New School\’s Maya Wiley; workshops from VerizonNYU Tandon School of EngineeringPratt Institute, and CTRL-Labs; and a sampling of the research projects that will demo at the event.

    Maya Wiley is a nationally renowned expert on racial justice and equity. She has litigated, lobbied the U.S. Congress, and developed programs to transform structural racism in the U.S. and in South Africa. Ms. Wiley is currently the Senior Vice President for Social Justice at The New School and the Henry Cohen Professor of Public & Urban Policy at The New School’s Milano School of International Affairs, Management & Urban Policy. She is an expert on Digital Equity and founded and Co-Directs The New School’s Digital Equity Laboratory.

Workshops will offer registered NYCML\’18 attendees the opportunity to take a deep dive into the technology trends shaping the media industry. \"\"\"\"Workshops coming to the event include…

    The Future of Neural Interfaces. Adam Berenzweig, CTRL-Labs. Biosensing techniques driven by machine learning, like brain-computer interfaces and neuromuscular interfaces, can eliminate the physical controller. This workshop will discuss the emerging field of neural interaction design and how it can enable new experiences for VR and MR.

    5G and the Rise of Dumb Machines. Joshua Ness, Kate Faye, Cat Schmitz and Jocelyn Doman, Verizon Open Innovation. 5G and related technologies like low-latency edge computing will fundamentally transform how devices process data. This workshop will explore how 5G will facilitate a new breed of mobile device and the potential forms they will assume.

    Deepfakes and other AI-generated synthetic media: What should we fear? What can we do? Sam Gregory, WITNESS. What we can do about deepfakes and other AI-manipulated synthetic media? Explore types of deepfakes, brainstorm threat models, and review possible technical, journalistic and policy solutions available to fight malicious uses.

    Remote activation of NYC’s largest industrial robot through interactive VR. Martin Orr and Cole Belmont, Pratt Institute, Consortium for Research & Robotics. New developments can capture complex human movements through VR, to directly program industrial robots. These simplifications permit the optimization and amplification of human movement. Workshop participants will learn, engage and participate in this research.

    Speculative Wearable Tech + Recycled Electronics. Kathleen McDermott, NYU Tandon School of Engineering. Discuss the future of wearables in relation to sustainability, and create extreme, imaginative, and speculative designs made from \”electronic junk\”.

As the event\’s signature \”science-fair,\” over 100 projects, prototypes and startups will be on view throughout The New School on Thursday, September 20th (1PM-5PM).

    A marker-based AR experiment that allows you to change a comic book narrative; from NYU Game Center.

    A voice interface designed for the needs and capabilities of low-literacy users, to improve learning; from Cornell Tech.

    A project that address bias in social media surveillance, to teach healthy media practice for youth and adults; from Columbia University.

    A smart tagging system that helps readers dig deeper on topics; from CUNY.

    An abstract music album that how the world has been changing with the advent of AI; from The New School.
