 ractice of Everyday Life</i></span><span class="s2">\, de Certeau writes th
 at “What the map cuts up\, the story cuts across.” But what if the everyday
  stories you seek are already cut up by centuries of structural inequality 
 and oppression\, such as those of lesbians and queer women? In this talk on
  “Queering the Map\,” </span><span class="s3"><b>Jack Gieseking investigate
 s what can be gained for the study of queer lives and spaces by bringing to
 gether the isolated but overlapping stories of lesbians and queer women in 
 maps\, from the hand-drawn to the most technologically advanced and interac
 tive.</b></span></p><p class="p3"><span class="s1">Drawing upon qualitative
  and quantitative work on lesbians’ and queer women’s spaces and economies 
 in New York City from 1983 to 2008—including multi-generational focus group
 s and mental maps\, archival research and GIS—Gieseking works through three
  different types of mapping methods and platforms within a participatory ac
 tion research framework. Through a close analysis of mental maps\, and GIS 
 maps made across platforms using QGIS\, CartoDB\, and TileMill/Mapbox\, the
 y suggest that the spatial and verbal can both obfuscate or illuminate unde
 rstandings of everyday life. It is the queer practice of holding these seem
 ing binaries in tension that reveals the most rich and complicated knowledg
 e.</span></p><p class="p1"><span class="s1"><b>Jen Jack Gieseking</b> is a 
 sociocultural geographer\, feminist and queer theorist\, and urban environm
 ental psychologist. He is engaged in research on co-productions of space an
 d identity in digital and material environments\, with a focus on sexual an
 d gender identities. Jack’s work pays special attention to how such product
 ions support or inhibit social\, spatial\, and economic justice. She is wor
 king on his first monograph\, <i>Queer New York: Geographies of Lesbians\, 
 Dykes\, and Queer Women\, 1983-2008</i>. He is <a href="http://internet2.tr
 incoll.edu/FacProfiles/default.aspx?fid=1480171"><span class="s4">Assistant
  Professor of Public Humanities in American Studies at Trinity College</spa
 n></a> in Hartford\, Connecticut\, and recently completed a Postdoctoral Fe
 llowship at Bowdoin College.</span></p><p class="p1"><span class="s1">Jack’
 s first book is <em><a href="http://peopleplacespace.org/"><span class="s4"
 >The People\, Place\, and Space Reader</span></a></em><span class="s4">\, c
 o-edited with William Mangold\, Cindi Katz\, Setha Low\, and Susan Saegert<
 /span>\, and recently out with Routledge. He has held fellowships with the 
 Alexander von Humboldt Foundation as German Chancellor Fellow\; The Center 
 for Place\, Culture\, and Politics\; The Center for Lesbian and Gay Studies
 \; and the Woodrow Wilson Women’s Studies Dissertation Fellows Program. Jac
 k has published in <i>Journal of Urban Affairs\,</i> <i>Qualitative Inquiry
 \, Journal of Interactive Technology & Pedagogy\, Antipode\, and Radical Hi
 story Review</i>\, and has contributed to <a href="http://hastac.org"><span
  class="s5">HASTAC</span></a> as well. She also writes about his research a
 s a blogger with the <i>Huffington Post Gay Voices</i>.</span></p>

 nd resources to contribute. Participants of all skill-levels are encouraged
  to join.</p><p>We’ll provide you with an introduction to the projects\, a 
 discussion of good documentation practices\, and help setting up your devel
 opment environment. You can work on your own personal project or help out o
 n a participating project\, such as <a href="http://dhbox.org/">DH Box</a>\

 ern experiments generate raw data with size\, dimensionality\, or complexit
 y that exceeds the capacity constraints imposed by neurobiology. The goal o
 f  computational visualization can therefore be posed as a dimensionality r
 eduction and feature engineering problem. Michael Waskom will discuss how t
 hese considerations can guide scientific data visualization practice and ho
 w they motivate the design of visualization software\, using the seaborn li
 brary as an example.</p><p>Michael Waskom is postdoctoral researcher in the
  <a href="http://www.cns.nyu.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Center fo
 r Neural Science</a> at New York University and a Junior Fellow of the <a h
 ref="https://www.simonsfoundation.org/simons-society-of-fellows/" target="_
 blank" rel="noopener">Simons Society of Fellows</a>. He uses behavioral\, c
 omputational\, and imaging methods to study the neural basis of decision-ma
 king and cognitive control. He received his PhD from Stanford University wo
 rking with <a href="http://memorylab.stanford.edu/" target="_blank" rel="no
 opener">Anthony Wagner</a>. His thesis focused on the functional organizati
 on of cognitive control systems in the human brain. Prior to grad school\, 
 he was a research assistant in <a href="http://gablab.mit.edu/" target="_bl
 ank" rel="noopener">John Gabrieli's</a> lab at MIT. He received an undergra
 duate degree from <a href="https://www.amherst.edu/" target="_blank" rel="n
 oopener">Amherst College</a>\, where he studied philosophy and neuroscience
 . In addition to research\, he has developed several open-source <a href="h
 ttp://www.cns.nyu.edu/%7Emwaskom/software/index.html" target="_blank" rel="
 noopener">software libraries</a> for data analysis and visualization.</p>

 ssistant Professor of Music Theory and Cognition at The Ohio State Universi
 ty and the specialty chief editor for the Digital Musicology section of Fro
 ntiers in Digital Humanities. This year she on leave from OSU and teaching 
 in the Music Technology program at NYU Steinhardt. Johanna's research focus
 es on interdisciplinary approaches to the study of musical performance. She
  examines the ways in which recorded performances can be used to study perf
 ormance practice and listener reception and develops computational tools to
  facilitate this. Her work draws on the disciplines of music\, psychology\,
  and computer science. Her research has been funded by the Social Sciences 
 and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSRHC)\, the Fonds de recherche 
 sur la société et la culture (FRQSC)\, the Google Faculty Research program\
 , and\, most recently\, the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) Dig
 ital Humanities program.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400">The 20
 17-2018 GCDI Sound Series includes talks and workshops on topics related to
  sound analysis\, comparison\, production\, and recording. This series expl

 for themselves to grow wise in other directions as well. On the other hand\
 , when they split up knowledge\, concentrate on their own field\, and scorn
  and ignore other fields\, they grow less wise—even in their own field. How
  often people speak of art and science as though they were two entirely dif
 ferent things\, with no interconnection. . . . That is all wrong. . . . If 
 we go through the history of human advance\, we find that there are many pl
 aces where art and science intermingled and where an advance in one was imp
 ossible without an advance in the other.</em></p><p><em>--Isaac Asimov\, A 
 Roving Mind (1983)</em></p><p> </p><p>Over twenty years after C. P. Snow pu
 blished <em>The Two Cultures</em>\, the unparalleled writer\, scientist\, a
 nd educator Isaac Asimov defends the “interconnection” between the sciences
  and the arts. In fact\, he demonstrates the importance of interdisciplinar
 ity—both within STEM fields as well as between STEM and the humanities—thro
 ugh his unsurpassed 500+ books ranging from Biblical scholarship to biochem
 istry\, and science to science fiction. He shows how disciplines inform and
  strengthen one another to create greater knowledge and wisdom\, which in t
 urn leads to greater understanding and new insights. While significant stri
 des have been made in promoting interdisciplinarity\, Asimov’s defense cont
 inues to echo today.</p><p> </p><p>This symposium explores SF in the spirit
  of Asimov’s defense by exploring interdisciplinarity through the lens of s
 cience fiction—a mediating ‘third culture’ (borrowing Snow’s term) that com
 bines the sciences and the humanities to extrapolate new worlds while refle
 cting on our own. Together\, we aim to uncover science fiction’s interdisci
 plinary roots as a literary form\, lens for research\, and pedagogical appr

 peculative Fiction and Feminist Theory</em>\, <em>Lost in Space: Probing Fe
 minist Science Fiction and Beyond</em>\, <em>Feminist Fabulation: Space/Pos
 tmodern Fiction</em>\, and <em>Genre Fission: A New Discourse Practice for 
 Cultural Studies</em>. Barr has edited many anthologies and co-edited the s
 cience fiction issue of PMLA. She is the author of the novels <em>Oy Pionee
 r!</em> and <em>Oy Feminist Planets: A Fake Memoir</em>.</p><p> </p><p><str
 ong>Jill Belli</strong>\, Ph.D.\, is Assistant Professor of English and Co-
 Director of the OpenLab\, the college’s open-source digital platform for te
 aching\, learning\, and collaborating. Jill teaches and researches utopian 
 studies and science fiction\, collaborates on a digital science fiction pro
 ject\, the <em>Futures Past Archive</em>\, and serves on the Steering Commi
 ttee and as the web developer for the Society for Utopian Studies. She is c
 urrently working on a book about happiness and well-being in education.</p>
 <p> </p><p><strong>Sandra Cheng</strong> is an Assistant Professor of Art H
 istory at New York City College of Technology. Her research interests inclu
 de seventeenth-century art and theory\; the history of collecting\, drawing
  and studio practice\; history of monstrosity in the Renaissance and Baroqu
 e\; comics and caricature\; and women photographers of the early twentieth 
 century. She is a Project Co-Director of the NEH-funded “Cultural History o
 f Digital Technology” project.</p><p> </p><p><strong>Patrick Corbett </stro
 ng>is an Assistant Professor of English at New York City College of Technol
 ogy\, and director of Serious Change Through Play\, a pedagogically-focused
  research group that encourages growth and learning through play across man
 y domains. He had worked previously in diverse fields including textile man
 ufacturing\, information technology\, healthcare policy research\, and moti
 on picture development before becoming a teacher and scholar of writing. Hi
 s research focuses on the unseen activities and cultural dimensions found i
 n the everyday use of communications technologies.</p><p><strong> </strong>
 </p><p><strong>Samuel R. Delany</strong><strong> </strong>is an influential
  SF writer\, recognized literary critic\, and retired professor. Born in 19
 42 and raised in Harlem\, he published his first novel\, <em>The Jewels of 
 Aptor</em>\, at the age of 20. His SF has won many of the field’s highest a
 ccolades\, including: Hugo for Best Short Story (“Aye\, and Gomorrah…”\, 19
 67)\, Hugo and Nebula Awards (“Time Considered as a Helix of Semi-Precious 
 Stones\,” 1968)\, and Nebula Award for Best Novel (<em>Babel-17</em>\, 1966
 \; and <em>The Einstein Intersection</em>\, 1967). Delany’s critical studie
 s of SF\, such as <em>The Jewel-Hinged Jaw</em> and <em>Starboard Wine</em>
  continue to fuel debate. For <em>The Motion of Light in Water</em>\, he wo
 n the Hugo for Best Nonfiction. Delany is also a retired professor. He has 
 taught as a professor of Comparative Literature at the University of Massac
 husetts Amherst\, of English at SUNY Buffalo\, and of English and Creative 
 Writing at Temple University. Delany’s considerable contributions to the SF
  field have been recognized by the Science Fiction Research Association’s P
 ilgrim Award in 1985 and the J. Lloyd Eaton Lifetime Achievement Award in 2
 010. In 2013 he was named the 31<sup>st</sup> Damon Knight Memorial Grand M
 aster of Science Fiction by the Science Fiction Writers of America. For his
  lifetime contributions to LGBTQ studies he received the Kessler Award in 1
 997 from the CLAGS Center for LGBTQ Studies\, housed at the CUNY Graduate C
 enter.<strong>   </strong></p><p><strong> </strong></p><p><strong>Jason W. 
 Ellis</strong> is an Assistant Professor of English at New York City Colleg
 e of Technology\, and a former Marion L. Brittain Fellow of Georgia Tech. H
 e coedited <em>The Postnational Fantasy: Postcolonialism\, Cosmopolitics an
 d Science Fiction </em>(Jefferson\, NC: McFarland\, 2011). His research int
 erests include science fiction\, digital technology\, and LEGO. Read about

 ong> received her doctorate in German Literature in 2011 from New York Univ
 ersity. She teaches Introduction to Poetry and English 1121 at New York Cit
 y College of Technology\, and Ancient Literature and Composition at Borough
  of Manhattan Community College. Her current research interests include sci
 ence fiction’s role in the classroom\, research on Ursula K. Le Guin\, and 
 connections between dance\, literature\, and philosophy.</p><p> </p><p><str
 ong>Adam Heidebrink-Bruno</strong> is a graduate student in Lehigh Universi
 ty’s Literature and Social Justice program. He is particularly interested i
 n how storytelling\, broadly conceived\, is used to mediate and influence r
 eal world events\, including culture and politics. Adam’s scholarship focus
 es on contemporary American fiction with an emphasis on science fiction.</p
 ><p> </p><p><strong>Kimon Keramidas</strong> is associate director and clin
 ical assistant professor in the Center for Experimental Humanities in New Y
 ork University’s Graduate School for Arts and Sciences. Kimon is a cultural
  historian whose research focuses on the study of media and technology thro
 ugh the lenses of political economy and sociology of culture. His most rece
 nt project was the exhibition The Interface Experience: Forty Years of Pers
 onal Computing which presented some of the most ubiquitous objects in the h
 istory of personal computing in tactile and interactive displays. Kimon’s r
 esearch and teaching considers digital tools not only as objects of study\,
  but also as a means for performing research and scholarship. Kimon is acti
 ve in the fields of digital humanities and interactive technology and pedag
 ogy\, and has helped found and is on the editorial collective of The Journa
 l of Interactive Technology and Pedagogy\, and founded and is on the steeri
 ng committee of New York City Digital Humanities. Read about his work at ki
 monkeramidas.com.</p><p> </p><p><strong>Anastasia Klimchynskaya</strong> is
  a doctoral candidate at the University of Pennsylvania\, where she's worki
 ng on a dissertation on the emergence of science fiction in the 19th centur
 y. In particular\, she situates the rise of the genre within the history of
  science\, focusing on the way new scientific paradigms\, modes of thought\
 , and forms of knowledge gave rise to it\, and on creating a theory of the 
 genre based in that history. She has taught several courses on science fict
 ion and the history of science\, including “Living in a Science Fiction Wor
 ld\," which used sci-fi to tackle contemporary sociopolitical\, legal\, and
  technological issues. Her other intellectual interests include exploring t
 he mechanisms through which science fiction becomes science fact\, the way 
 science fiction can be used as a tool to develop law\, policy\, and researc
 h agendas\, and the semiotics of science fiction.</p><p> </p><p><strong>Luc
 as Kwong </strong>is an Assistant Professor of English at New York City Col
 lege of Technology and musician. His research interests include postcolonia
 l theory and Victorian literature\, religion and secularization\, and the f
 antastic. When not grading papers and researching Victorian popular fiction
 \, I write songs and perform as part of THE BROTHER K MELEE (www.brotherkmu
 sic.com).</p><p> </p><p><strong>Anne Leonhardt</strong> is an Associate Pro
 fessor of Architecture at New York City College of Technology\, and she is 
 a registered architect in the State of New York. Her research\, teaching\, 
 and design practice focus on the material and environmental interfaces betw
 een architectural design\, form\, and tectonics. Areas of expertise include
  associative computational design\, building performance analysis\, informa
 tion modeling systems\, fabrication\, and sustainable materials and energy.
  She is the Project Director of the NEH-funded “Cultural History of Digital
  Technology” project.</p><p> </p><p><strong>Keith Muchowski </strong>is a l
 ibrarian and professor at New York City College of Technology (CUNY). His a
 reas of interest include nineteenth and twentieth century military history\
 , the politics and culture of the Cold War\, and the Roosevelt family.</p><
 p> </p><p><strong>Sharon Packer\, MD</strong> is a physician and psychiatri
 st who is in private practice and is Assistant Clinical Professor at Icahn 
 School of Medicine at Mt. Sinai. She is the author of several books that li
 nk science\, psychiatry and the humanities\, including <em>Neuroscience in 
 Science Fiction Film\, Cinema’s Sinister Psychiatrists\, Movies and the Mod
 ern Psyche\, Superheroes & Superegos: the Minds behind the Masks\; Dreams i
 n Myth\, Medicine & Movies. </em>She edited two multi-volume books on <em>E
 vil in American Popular Culture </em>and <em>Mental Illness in Popular Cult
 ure. </em>She writes regular articles on “Why Psychiatrists are Physicians

 ojects that integrate humanities with education in science and technology\,

 esentational authority over future landscapes in southern Louisiana. These

 esent. They enter circulation in urgent news stories and fifty year urban m
 aster plans\, and they are magnets for words like ‘resilience’ and ‘retreat
 .’ At public planning meetings\, predictive maps that stage the parish land
 scape over coming decades are important guides for community decision-makin
 g. In order to better understand these risky images\, the futures they purp
 ort to represent\, and their effects in the present\, this project asks aft
 er the kinds of data sets and attendant assumptions that go into mapping th
 ese not-yet-existent landscapes. What inclusions and omissions make them po
 ssible? What contingencies or uncertainties are elided? These questions can
  help us understand how representations of climate futures set the paramete

 ><p>Introduction to Classical Cultures is a video-podcast series about the 
 Classics that features motion graphic design to provide a smart and enjoyab
 le overview of Greek and Latin literature. The series is aimed to update th
 e teaching approach of the classics\, bringing it closer to the rest of the
  humanities. Subjects of the podcast-series will be the works of the most i
 mportant Classical authors\, which largely coincide with the course “Classi
 cal Cultures” offered in most universities in the United States. The six vi
 deos—three about Greek authors\, three about Latin authors­—will cover the 
 major literary genres of antiquity and will be in chronological order\, so 
 as to offer a general overview on Classical culture.</p><p> </p></div>

 m Berlin to Beijing\, men are joining seduction communities (charm schools)
  to learn skills in dating women. These communities raise questions of inti
 macy\, consent\, and authenticity as problems for men who learn techniques 
 of social persuasion as they seek to attract women and transform their pers
 onal identities. By displacing sexual inhibitions\, these communities focus
  on developing forms of social capital through “weak ties” (Putnam 2000) th
 at allow men to feel a sense of belonging in impersonal urban environments.
  This project uses digital software for text mining and topic modeling of b
 ig data to find out how men are developing an embodied sense of masculine i
 dentity through standardized training in seduction skills. Conducting stati
 stical analyses and comparisons among prescriptive texts (ebooks and seduct
 ion manuals) with descriptive accounts (digitally published diaries) of use
 rs’ experiences and mishaps in striving to embody so-called “alpha masculin
 ity\,” this project aims to discover what kinds of social intimacies follow
  from the labor of dating consultants\, and what happens to those men who b
 uild social communities—both online and in real life—around their practices
 . For which men do seduction skills come to be thought of as integral to th
 eir self-fashioning? How does rationalizing intimacy create new forms of po
 wer and dependency between men? What do seduction communities reveal about 
 the vulnerabilities and frailties of masculinity today? This research is be
 ing developed for public view using Scalar\, a multimedia storytelling plat

 rship and Mentoring Program and cofounder and codirector of HASTAC (Humanit
 ies\, Arts\, Science and Technology Alliance and Collaboratory)\, the world
 ’s first and oldest academic social network. Her most recent book is The Ne
 w Education: How to Revolutionize the University To Prepare Students for a 
 World in Flux (Basic Books\, 2017).</p><p><strong>Racquel Gates </strong>is
  an Assistant Professor at the College of Staten Island\, CUNY. Her researc
 h focuses on blackness and popular culture\, with special attention to disc
 ourses of taste and quality. She has written numerous essays on film and me

 ><p><strong>Siqi Tu</strong> is a Futures Initiative Fellow and a doctoral 
 candidate in Sociology at the Graduate Center\, CUNY. She earned a BA degre
 e in Sociology from Fudan University (China) and a MA degree in Sociology f
 rom Columbia University. Her work focuses on the areas of urban sociology\,
  immigration\, education\, elites\, and contemporary Chinese societies. Her
  dissertation\, “Destination Diploma: How Chinese Upper-Middle Class Famili
 es ‘Outsource’ Secondary Education to the United States”\, investigates why
  and how Chinese upper-middle-class families make decisions to send their c
 hildren to the United States to attend private high schools\, some as young
  as 14 years of age\, and it analyzes the actual lived experiences of the s
 tudents of this “parachute-generation”. She has been teaching sociology at 
 Brooklyn College from 2014 and was a Writing-Across-Curriculum (WAC) Fellow

  Agents”</p><p>In this talk\, I will argue that one must account for the ma
 teriality of the body in the wearable interface. The wearable interface is 
 a process enacted within an assemblage of dress-body-technology\, with the 
 potential to construct a radical cyborg subject. However\, the current most
  ubiquitous form of wearable technology\, the fitness tracker\, fails to fu
 lfill the cyborg’s promise of kinship and affinity. Instead it facilitates 
 the myth of self-reliant neoliberal subjectivity. I examine alternative lan
 dscapes in which wearables might contribute to counterpublic formation thro
 ugh arts and design\, as well as feminist epistemologies and critical makin
 g in the university classroom.</p><p>About Kim Knight</p><p>Kim Knight is a
  digital media scholar whose research encompasses the fields of media\, lit
 erary\, cultural\, and film studies\, exploring the ways digital culture af
 fects negotiations of power and the formation of identity. Relationships be
 tween media\, technologies\, and subjects\, how they interact in “real life
 ” and in the manner in which cultural texts represent them\, are of special
  interest to her.</p><p>Knight teaches courses in digital media theory\, th
 e shift from analog to digital textuality\, viral media\, wearable technolo
 gy\, and race\, class\, gender\, and sexuality in digital environments\, ut
 ilizing both theory and practice methodologies. As such\, her work uniquely
  blends traditional modes of scholarship with the production of theoretical
 ly informed media objects. Knight is the editor-in-chief of the blog\, The 
 Spiral Dance\, and serves as project lead for the Fashioning Circuits Lab\,
  addressing the social and cultural implications of the intersection betwee
 n fashion and technology. She earned her PhD from the University of Califor
 nia Santa Barbara and received her Master’s with distinction from Californi

 ther or not they could that they didn’t stop to think if they should.”</p><
 p>--Ian Malcolm (Jeff Goldblum)\, <i>Jurassic Park</i> (1993)</p><p>Ian Mal
 colm’s admonition above is as much a rebuke to the lasting echo of Victor F
 rankenstein’s ambition to accomplish “more\, far more” as it is to park own
 er John Hammond’s explaining\, “Our scientists have done things no one coul
 d ever do before.” Films like <i>Jurassic Park</i> and the kind of literatu
 re that came to be known as Science Fiction (SF) owe a tremendous debt to M
 ary Shelley’s <i>Frankenstein\, or The Modern Prometheus</i> (1818). In add
 ition to being an (if not the) inaugural work of SF\, Mary Shelley builds h
 er cautionary tale around interdisciplinary approaches to science\, and she
  takes this innovation further by applying the humanities to question the n
 ature of being in the world\, the effects of science on society\, and the e
 thical responsibilities of scientists. These are only some of <i>Frankenste
 in</i>’s groundbreaking insights\, which as Brian Aldiss and David Wingrove
  observe in <i>Trillion Year Spree</i> (1986)\, “is marvellously good and i
 nexhaustible in its interest” (20). The many dimensions of interdisciplinar
 ity in <i>Frankenstein</i> and the SF that followed are the focus of the Th
 ird Annual City Tech Science Fiction Symposium.</p><p>In this special anniv
 ersary year of Mary Shelley’s <i>Frankenstein</i>\, join us for a one-day s
 ymposium discussing interdisciplinarity and SF. Continuing conversations be
 gan in the earlier symposia\, we seek to investigate SF’s power as an extra
 polating art form with interdisciplinarity at its core\, including interdis
 ciplinarity within STEM fields and the interdisciplinary synergy of STEM an
 d the humanities.</p><p>We invite presentations of 15-20 minutes on SF and

 s ago\, <em>Analog Science Fiction and Fact</em> began its storied history 
 as one of the most important and influential SF magazines with the publicat
 ion of its first issue under the title <em>Astounding Stories of Super-Scie
 nce</em>. During that time\, its fabled editors\, award-winning writers\, r
 ecognized artists\, and invested readers played roles in the development of
  one of the longest running and renowned SF magazines\, which in turn\, inf
 luenced the field and adapted to change itself.</p><p> </p><p>The Fourth An
 nual City Tech Science Fiction Symposium will celebrate “An Astounding 90 Y
 ears of <em>Analog Science Fiction and Fact</em>.” It will feature talks\, 
 readings\, and discussion panels with <em>Analog Science Fiction and Fact</
 em>’s current and past editors and writers\, and paper presentations and di
 scussion panels about its extensive history\, its relationship to the SF ge
 nre\, its connection to fandom\, and its role within the larger SF publishi
 ng industry.</p><p> </p><p>We invite proposals for 15-20 minute paper prese
 ntations that explore or strongly relate to <em>Analog Science Fiction and

 iction\, on a fundamental level\, is always about the here-and-now in which
  it is produced\, because it is from that point the author extrapolates an 
 imagined future or alternate reality. The long and hard fight for civil rig
 hts and the latest unfolding of that struggle in the Black Lives Matter mov
 ement and its alliances calls on us to recognize the powerful possibilities
  within Science Fiction to imagine change\, especially those promoting soci
 al justice and equality by writers of color and Afrofuturists\, as well as 
 reckon with the field’s patterns of racism\, resistance to inclusion\, and 
 lack of representation.</p><p>The Fifth Annual City Tech Science Fiction Sy
 mposium aims to explore the possibilities for change through the myriad con
 nections between Race and Science Fiction with scholarly presentations\, re
 adings by authors\, and engaging discussion. It is our goal to foster conve
 rsations that question\, critique\, or discuss SF as it relates to Race.</p
 ><p>We invite proposals for 10-20 minute scholarly paper presentations\, pa
 nel discussions\, or author readings related to the topic of race and Scien
 ce Fiction. Please send a 250-word abstract with title\, brief professional
  bio\, and contact information to Jason Ellis (jellis@citytech.cuny.edu) by
  September 30\, 2020. Topics with a connection to race and Science Fiction 
 might include but are certainly not limited to:</p><p>- Histories of race a
 nd Science Fiction.<br />- Representation of race in Science Fiction.<br />
