Event Recap of Biography and Memoir Illustrated, on May 15, 2025

  • Our thanks to the many friends, colleagues and people new to The Graduate Center, who attended our event “Biography and Memoir Illustrated: A Talk with Writer Timothy Ledwith, Comics Artist N. Steven Harris and Historian Debbie-Ann Paige Moderated by Graphic Novelist Sara Gómez Woolley.”

It took place at The Graduate Center, in the DGSC Social lounge, room 5414. The discussion was led by Professor Sara Gómez Woolley and featured a first-ever live reading by Tim Ledwith of a slideshow presentation of panels drawn by Mr. Harris from the forthcoming Graphic History, Standoff on Fairview Avenue.

Professor Gómez Woolley conducted a Q&A about the development of this special book on one of Staten Island’s most important and notorious events—a subject of investigation by Historian Debbie-Ann Paige, who generously answered questions and gave greater context to the associated lore and history which Mr. Harris and Mr. Ledwith’s non-fiction graphic history will chronicle. Mr. Harris talked the audience through the complex process of illustrating Mr. Ledwith’s text and his own artistic practice and methods of visual research.

Below are a slideshow and a smartphone recording of the Thursday May 15, 2025 panel and talk with Writer Timothy Ledwith, Comics Artist N. Steven Harris and Historian Debbie-Ann Paige and moderated by noted Graphic Novelist Sara Gómez Woolley.
