I have 20 years of service as an adjunct, and for me seniority is a top priority in the new contract negotiations.Without a system of seniority among adjuncts, favoritism will win the day and in the end, there will be no job protection for any of us. Furthermore, without a clearly defined protocol for assigning courses, adjuncts fight adjuncts as everyone jockeys for work. This is especially important since our union is strictly adhering to the 9/6 rule. Not only is there animosity between full and part time faculty when a full timer "bumps" an adjunct, but we also have animosity among part timers when new hires "bump" long-serving adjuncts. Surely, union members could not be more divided than when we fight each other — and let's remember the adage: "Divided we fall."
