Paolo Freire and Carter Woodson both envis ioned a liberatory educational practice that would someday upend the social order of our world. With the advent of learning
technologies\, the r ealization of that vision is well within the grasp of contemporary educator s. As the world enters the Anthropocene era\, society is on the cusp of fin ally understanding the delicate web that connects us all to our natural wor ld and to each other. However\, political and social inequality\, deepening racial and economic divides and increasingsocial injustice have continued to plague humanity. Join us on as we explore emerging Academic techno logies that have the potential to change the world and further our goal of education for empowerment and freedom.
The CUNY Centers for Teaching and Learning invite you to submit your abstracts and participate in the Bes t Practices in Academic Technology Conference.

Description< /p>
Join us at the Graduate Center on November 18 from 1-2 PM in the Skyl ight Room (room 9100) for an open\, livestreamed discussion.
This is the fourth of eight conversations as part of The University Worth Fighting For\, a year-long project designed to tie student-centered\, engaged practices in our classrooms to larger issues of institutional change\, equality\, race\, gender\, and all forms of social justice.
The discussion on career paths and hiring practices will ran ge from practical suggestions to higher-order questions\, including thorny issues related to the casualization of academic labor\, the size of PhD pro grams\, and ways that expanding our expectations of career outcomes might a ffect the structure of graduate programs (as well as who has access to thos e programs and who sees them as worth the investment).

Directors of online programs at CUNY and o ther interested parties are invited to learn about the results of a survey of online learners at CUNY\, and discuss implications for enrollment\, rete ntion\, and student success in online and hybrid courses. This survey has b een conducted by Profs. Kay Conway\, Alyse Hachey and Claire Wladis of BMCC with students from across CUNY over three semesters since fall 2014\, and will be continuing through the next year. Roughly 30\,000 survey responses have been collected to date.
All students enrolled in a course at CUN Y that had at least one section that was offered in an online or hybrid for mat were invited to participate in the survey\; as a result\, survey respon ses include students who took the same course in a fully online\, hybrid\, or face-to-face format. Students were asked about their reasons for enrolli ng in an online course\, about work and family factors that likely impact b oth online enrollment decisions and course/college outcomes\, and about the ir time use. They were also asked about various attitudes/skills that might be relevant to online enrollment or course outcomes such as motivation\, e ngagement\, academic integration\, self-directed learning skills\, time man agement skills\, preference for autonomy\, and grit. Affective factors such as gender and ethnic identity and stigma consciousness as well as math and subject identification and self-efficacy were also included\, and some ana lyses were performed to look particularly at STEM versus non-STEM differenc es. Demographic questions were also included in the survey.
Participa nts are invited to attend in person at BMCC or via webinar. Detailed inform ation about room location and webinar access will be confirmed shortly.

Join the F utures Initiative on February 14th from 12-2pm for “Co-creating Soc ial Change: Transformative Learning in a Community College.”
This discussion will showcase a collaborative inquiry project conducted wi th and for students participating in the peer activist learning community ( PALC)\, a student-based co-curricular program. PALC offers an alternative m odel to improving retention in community colleges by highlighting the centr ality of students’ activist contributions to their educational practices as key to emancipatory approaches in higher education. Drawing on theory as w ell as activist practices\, this project engaged students as co-researchers in critically examining and transforming their conceptions and practices o f learning. It provided students with the space and tools to actively co-au thor their knowledge about learning as a social practice grounded in their own pursuits to address their struggles as community college students.

Restructuring Our Work and Our World”. As we wrap up the semester\, faculty and students from our Fall 2018 Team-T aught Courses will take the stage in what will be the culmination of a fruitful series of courses that are aimed at supporting diversity\, equity\ , and student-centered interdisciplinary learning at the graduate level. Th is will also be a unique opportunity to learn about the nuts and bolts of o ur organization\, as The Futures Initiative Team will walk the talk and mak e the audience engage in a practical example of how we think and work for a more equitable and innovative higher education.
Whether subtle or ov ert\, the dynamics of inclusion and exclusion are all around us. Classrooms \, workplaces\, and cultural representations are all sites of welcome or al ienation (or both). This timely event will include discussion\, hands-on wo rkshop sessions\, and even an opera performance —all with the aim of consid ering the ways in which the structures that surround us do or do not contri bute to a sense of belonging and agency. As educators\, students\, and prac titioners\, we have an opportunity to help design more equitable futures. p>
This symposium will be structured in sessions that will draw on the th ree courses team-taught this Fall:
Before the end \, since we strive to be inclusive by nature\, the Futures Initiative Gradu ate Fellows will lift the curtain and show you the program’s backstage. Thu s the audience will be able to see and take part in our kitchen\, where we prepare recipes for the future of a more equitable and innovative higher ed ucation.
This event is free. Please RSVP\, seating is limited! A casual reception will follow at 6pm in Room 3317.
